@QuitYourYappin I still get back to R-type Final now and then and would love for it to get on the PSN. Everytime I play it I'm surprised how tethered I feel playing with the DS2's.

Ride review

David_W

@agent55 I agree and blame it on that it's probably hard to sell such an introvert game, just the bike, the track, and a lap timer, in this day and age. And a TT2 with an improvement on TT's scope with added online multiplayer and a full campaign of some sort is probably not easy to find the funding for.

@Faramis As a motorcyclist I can tell you that you are wrong about a bike being controlled by shifting your weight around. The technique used is called counter steering and is however not easily translated to a gamepad either. Having the right riding position will have some effect on your riding line but to what degree is a common misconception, even among newbie riders. Riding in a straight line and shifting your weight around will, at the most, make you wobble a bit.

maybe "less than one per cent" is par for the course, but that sounds rather high for a system that sells over a million copies at launch. After all, one per cent of a million is still 10,000[/qoute]

What are you trying to say here, 1 % of 200,000 is better than 1 % of 1,000,000 because it's a lower figure?

Bought Stickets on the strengths of this review and after playing it for about an hour on and off I don't really see myself getting back to it. And I love Drop 7, it's the only game I play with some regularity.

Shame about the lost jobs. Unlike the above posters, I always had an excellent experience shopping at Play. Even on the one occasion when my order was lost on its way to me, I was sent a replacement, no questions asked, as soon as I got in touch with them.

However, I did quit shopping from Play when they begun forcing me, a non-euro-using Swede, to convert from SEK to instead of SEK to for my purchases. Their SEK to exchange rate was just horrid.

Why Xbox failed in Japan

David_W

@anthonypappa Anecdotal, but interesting.

Is the Xbox preference an UK or English phenomena? I believe I only ever seen UK numbers reported.
1 0

David_W

@sega I don't disagree, but the same could certainly be said about at least "us" here in the Nordic countries.

We're heavily influenced by US-UK culture, we don't dub English shows/films and most of the times there's not even a localized version of software for us. I'd bet most of us still would pick English if there was though, I know I do.

@Dangerous_Dan Exactly, and that's what I would like to see elaborated. What makes Britons taste in game consoles differ from mainland Europe?

Do the UK have a larger proportion of CoD sales and so on...
4 1

David_W

@arcam Yeah, I'm aware of the obvious UK-US connections, just don't see the obvious correlation to taste in game consoles.

It's not like many European countries have a strong tie to Japan other than their tradition as a bringer of sweet technology.

The rise of Sackboy, the mascot PlayStation has been searching for

David_W

@X201 To be fair, initially they probably should have held back though.

Remember when Sega, for some incomprehensible reason, tried to push Opa-Opa as their counter to Mario?

I loved Fantasy Zone, FZ2 were one of my SMS favourites, but Opa-Opa wasn't a very cuddly character.

Sackboy is an excellent mascot. The fact that it's in his nature to dress up, makes it possible to customize him to cater to pretty much any audience and situation. Genius I'd say, although it kind of feels like it happened by accident.

How the Mass Effect 3 Wii U GamePad controls work

David_W

I don't see the benefit of this control scheme at all. Having to recharge my controller ever two hours is saving me from hitting start to switch inventory items or look at a map?

And don't give me that immersion preacher. We all know that every ZombieU player will raise the controller next to the screen to see what's going on while looting instead of looking down on it and ignore the big screen.

Am I the only one to see the GamePad primary as a mean for Nintendo to sell iPad-app-like games via their own distribution net that are meant solely to play on the GamePad. And not primary as a way to deliver new control methods for existing titles?

Grid 2 teased by Codies

David_W

Great news, along with GT5 my most played racer this generation.

GRID was excellent but sure had it's flaws. The framerate could drop pretty bad at times (on PS3) and some stages we're almost impossible to play in anything but complete darkness, Le Mans at night was one IIRC. Also, the sponsor/co-driver system was more of a nuisance than fun to me.

Dead Trigger dev: "I do not believe that piracy can be stopped"

David_W

This all reeks of well executed PR plan. Every game site and many general tech-sites picked up on this and spread that there's a game, so good it's pirated to death, that now can be yours for f(2p)ree.

If i hadn't once and for all given up on touch games with more advanced controls (I've tried plenty, virtual buttons and tilt control simply won't do it for me) I might be tempted to pick it up.

Well played Madfinger Games I suppose.

Flash IS dying for mobile web, there's no denying it. http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.html.
7 10

David_W

Judging from the PS3 the choice of browser is disappointing. But to bring up the absence of Flash as a negative, especially for a mobile device, doesn't really make any sense. Even less so now that Adobe is switching from Flash to HTML 5 for mobile web.

The Vita seems like such a delicious piece of hardware but unfortunately I don't use handhelds enought to warrant a purchase.

Retrospective: Far Cry 2

David_W

Terrible, terrible game. I bought it when it was on sale on PSN some weeks ago and it has the most stupid AI I've encountered in a game in quite some time.

I love the part when you're out driving, as usual, in a HMG-equipped jeep and a single bad guy in his Datsun rear ends you and just sits there for a minute.

Using stealth is also fun. If spotted you can jump in a car, drive for miles, climb a mountain, and hide behind a rock. Within 2 minutes you will have 5-6 jeeps crashing into each other a few meters of your hiding spot.
Also, it doesn't really matter if they see you or not. I had an episode where there were two guards left at an outpost, I could see them running away from me in my scope, still every time they fired their guns - away from me - I took damage.

Also, Ubisoft isn't fooling anyone with the faction leaders: "Remember, no one knows you're working for us, so even our side will attack you...". They simply couldn't code a working solution for handling friendlies, so much easier to have everybody attack you on sight.

Also, the convoy missions for weapons, WTH! Go to the spot where 3-4 cars are driving in their idiotic, endless circle. Plant IEV, rinse and repeat 5-6 times. Very creative.

Sure, the surroundings look amazing, but the AI is beyond ridiculos. I usually finish games but I just can't stand going back to FC2. Rubbish game.

Myths?

All of his "myths" seems like common knowledge; mobile gaming will evolve over the next three years - who would have guessed it...

Also, casual gaming rules supreme on iOS devices. The games he mentions might have had a few days at the top 25 list due to hype but all is well in Angry Bird territory again.
