Geralt of Rivia: A disabled protagonist

DMBAR

Not related to this article really, but I always thought that Aiden Pearce in Watch Dogs could and perhaps should have been a paraplegic. For me all the best parts of the game involved hacking cameras, etc. and causing chaos while driving. It probably would have been a better game if he was never on foot at all. If the gameplay fits then a character can easily be severely disabled without spoiling it in any way. On the contrary it makes more narrative sense that they need to rely on other skills than just physical combat to deal with an enemy.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla now offers 30fps next-gen performance option

Can someone tell me what frame rate and resolution I would get on the Xbox Series X using a 120Hz/1440p monitor? Presumably it's a locked 60fps in performance mode and downscaled to 1440p from a range of various dynamic resolutions, or is there the possibility of native 1440p at a higher frame rate?

Football Manager 2021 review - a world-beating sim, better than ever

@gallinho CM 01/02 is my favourite too. I disliked all the FM iterations until I tried the Touch versions of the recent games. You can't zip through a season as quickly as you could in CM 01/02 but still a damn sight faster than in full fat FM. You're really not missing anything important anyway - mainly just interactions with players and media. Team selection, tactics and player transfers are all about the same as in full fat.

It's a shame that the Touch version doesn't get more attention as too many regard it as just a mobile/tablet downgrade instead of realising that it's just a faster streamlined version. This year's isn't out until December 1st by the way.

Watch 80 minutes of XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

@AmorousBadger That mission was great and really different to the others. Only downside was that after you'd done it once it was so easy to replay as you knew exactly what was going to happen, where and when.

The original X-COM was cancelled, but development continued in secret

DMBAR

@Zerobob So you understand the lineage of the games and know that its sequels X-COM: Terror from the Deep, X-COM: Apocalypse and X-COM: Interceptor all preceded XCOM: Enemy Unknown by many, many years, yet insist the latter is the original X-COM?

Fact is, this was the original X-COM in any way you want to look at it.

@Zerobob It's not misleading at all. UFO: Enemy Unknown was the first in a series of X-COM games, and was also known as X-COM: UFO Defense.

The reboot you're talking about is and always has been called XCOM, not X-COM.

Do games stores all get copies from publishers on a sale or return basis then? I thought retailers bought however many they thought they could sell (and buying more gives them a bigger bulk discount) and that's why there's often big clearance sales on certain items months or years down the line.

I have no idea how it works - just wondering.

Green Man Gaming says sorry for sending out broken Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 keys

DMBAR

@Perjoss They're only dodgy in the sense that they buy keys in bulk from distributors in countries where the keys are cheaper, eg brazil or eastern Europe. I don't think there's anything illegal in this although the developers/publishers will no doubt get less profit than if customers bought from the likes of GMG.

They're a completely different kettle of fish to the likes of Kinguin or G2A, etc. where not only is there a greater chance that the customer will get an invalid key, there's also the possiblity that keys were attained with stolen credit cards or in some other way providing no revenue at all to the developers/publishers.

Shadow of Mordor 2 leaked via stuntwoman's resume

Despite the fact that the combat and open world were very derivative of the Arkham and Ass Creed games I found it more enjoyable than either, at least for a short while. There was definitely a sweet spot where the nemesis system had kicked in but you weren't yet overpowered. Once you are allowed to find out the warchiefs weaknesses and brand enemies to join your side then the game becomes way, way too easy.

Ken Levine's next game is a "small-scale open world"

DMBAR

I don't understand why Levine is being criticised here. He's spot on with the current player mindset and the business concerns of publishers.

These days I'm constantly reading user reviews which gauge the value for money aspect over actual quality and VFM seems to equal hours to complete in their eyes.

A 10-12 hour single player game is the most likely to be rented or bought second hand, or purchase delayed until it's cheaper, compared to a longer open world or multiplayer game, so the latter two are obviously much more appealing to publishers, and a quicker and more guaranteed way of earning back the development and marketing costs.

Personally I'd much prefer to play an excellent 10-20 hour game than a bloated 30 hour+ open worlder which I enjoyed about 10 hours of.

As for the type of game Levine is hinting at, I think Dishonored is the direction he wants to take - a tight narrative but with different possible play styles and choices which effect the story/atmosphere.
