Now Belgium declares loot boxes gambling and therefore illegal

Concrete

@JakiGefjon

Some cases are easier than others.

UI and UX work could be done relatively quickly (but nothing like a day quickly). But removing dedicated server support and replacing them with peer to peer would take time.

What, you think Activision are going to pay for servers for a game thats no longer generating income? :D

@mega-gazz

As mentioned previously, I think HS is an example of where the product could be fixed relatively quickly. BUT it will have a massive effect on its profitability and will also probably degrade the game experience.

Card games like HS are almost impossible to balance correctly given the number of potential card interactions so they rely on players not having exactly the cards they want to enforce variety even though some card combinations always ending up being OP. If players can pick and choose their cards you will end up with every player using the same identical deck because its statistically the most likely to win. (This is what happens at top level play but most players are not exposed to it).

@marcsmashing

For games already on the market they wont have any choice.

It would take at least six months to redesign the progression of a game and implement the changes (thats being very generous) and then go through certification.

If the game has already been pulled from a market it will already have lost its momentum/user base and therefore no longer be a viable ongoing concern, especially if they can no longer turn a profit due to micro transactions being taken off the table.

They will wind the games down in territories as they are forced to.

There will be exceptions, one that springs to mind is Hearthstone as monetisation is not tied tightly into its core progression mechanics. Obviously it remains to be seen if Activision will be keen to keep it going if its no longer profitable..

@mega-gazz

What will happen is the same as in every industry. You scale up as costs come down with bulk.

So gamers will get way less selection of games (which lets be honest has been shitty this generation anyway).
2 0

Concrete

4 weeks ago

@FilthyAnimal

Unfortunately its already happening. Pretty much any game that is already released with micro transactions will be withdrawn from sale in the effected regions. The cost of retroactively reworking progression and systems to support the change isn't economically viable, easier to just cut those gamers loose.

On future products? Hard to say for sure, but if its only a couple of stand outs then then products will simply not be made available (both triple A and mobile), if it becomes a Europe wide ruling then it will be interesting to see how things play out.

PlayStation blocks launch of creepy "pick-up artist" game Super Seducer

@kangarootoo

Well thanks for at least taking the time to explain your point of view to me.

BUT

Effective manipulation is not something that you are going to learn from a multiple choice computer game, no more than playing Monkey Island is going to make you an effective pirate.

Its a combination of personality traits, the correct environment and lots and lots of practice not something that you can learn in 2 hours.

This takes me back to my original point, it IS bollocks being peddled by a conman and the best thing would be to let people play the game and realize as such instead of banning it and further increasing its infamy.

The concept of the pick-up artist, from what I understand is there is a universal set of behaviors that will allow you to entice woman.

This is fucking nonsense. Women are individuals with unique interests and desires not robots that can be reprogrammed with the correct debug commands. Why is the media even giving it attention?
26 11

Concrete

3 months ago

Ok, I dont get this whole drama over and indeed concept of "pick up artists".

Are we effectively saying that women are such simple creatures that there are magical words and gestures that effectively take of their brain and force them to do men's bidding?

Therefore they must remain forbidden to prevent the enslavement of women kind?

Because that sounds like complete bullshit to me, in fact it sounds outright sexist.

Is it not much more likely the case that some conman is promising the more hapless members of society the moon on a stick and the media has blown it out of all proportion because "drama" with the end result being infamy for the conman and the further dis-empowerment of women?

Or have I completely misunderstood the situation?

Edit: Must be a lot of aspiring pick-up artists on Eurogamer :D

If I remember the rule correctly, it applies to coaching staff not players.

And critically, it operates on a equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome basis, which I think everyone thinks is a good idea (except maybe the author of this article).

This article is going to turn into a shit show.

If as a team owner you have just dropped 20 million to compete in a league, you are not going to get in a load of diversity hires to pander to the perpetually offended.

You are competing in a global competition, so you get the best players that you can from around the world, as that's what every other team will be doing.

To conclude, if you want to compete at the highest tiers maybe you should "get gud" first.

9 9

Concrete

Lots of points raised, but one thing that needs to be mentioned (and indeed has been mentioned in the case of the Doom example) is scale.

This is a game on an unprecedented scale and as such the required foundations will be so much larger than a conventional project. Its to be expected that visible process will take longer unfortunately. There are also inefficiencies due to the scale of the management required for a project attempting to shift the goal posts but I don't think its enough to sink it.

Sure its taking time, but my finely tuned "this project is imploding" sensors haven't been triggered yet.

I'm a huge Privateer fan, so maybe I'm cutting it more than its fair share of slack but I still believe it will deliver. Not enough to back it mind, but thats because pre-ordering is a mugs game.

I think the key word here is "Alpha".

For comparison heres what the Doom Alpha looked like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6YTBTSsrqU

Its not a game yet, its a tech demo, they are hitting the hardest engine tasks like physics, rendering and scale-able infrastructure first as those will exert the most restrictions on the final games design.

If you are building a massive building you make sure the foundations are damned solid, otherwise the whole lot will come crashing down at some point. This is basic engineering, it isn't sexy but it is responsible and essential and applies as much to games as any other engineering project.

I'm not a backer, but I do live opposite the Sagrada Familia and thats been under construction for 100 years but its going to be fucking epic when its finished. Maybe this will be the same.

I know games journalists need to incite a mob these days to pay the bills, but please at least TRY and research how games development actually works.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot boxes investigated by Belgian Gaming Commission

Concrete

6 months ago

@TwinStripeUK

Nailed it.

Gamers should be VERY careful what they wish for here. Its a very slippery slope where laws are concerned, as pretty much every game outside of Chess and Go has RNG elements and its going to be a struggle to write laws that aren't going to be a piece of piss for games designers to circumvent without broad strokes laws that could be hugely damaging for the whole industry.

That and the fact that games publishers are businesses, if they can't make the required profit from a product, they will pivot to other products. Has no one noticed how few AAA console games are released today, they simply aren't profitable, even as a service with loot boxes.

Sorry Marie-Claire Isaaman, but you are talking nonsense.

Women have been able to complete with men in eSports on an equal footing since forever in Counter Strike. They haven't been good enough. Women only tournaments are an attempt to encourage women and try and get them up to speed, although so far they haven't succeeded.

FWIW, ability VS pay, women CS:GO players are earning multiples of the salary paid to men at the same level, because they are far more marketable. Although I guess you are saying that women having a large pay gap over men is holding them back because they get paid without having to put in as much effort? Valid point.

Having said that, I dont really want Valve to have another monopoly over gaming, so hopefully they find ways to make it more accessible.
