Amid restructure and redundancies, Sega buys Marvel Puzzle Quest dev Demiurge

They are only doing this to give Satomi Jnr a job and save his honour in light of a disasterous set of results over the past few years. If it wasn't for that Sammy would have cut and run years ago, and probably should have.

Mobile F2P is a viable business model that "Atari" have failed to break into, this is just beyond sad. One look at the linked in profile ( https://www.linkedin.com/pub/frederic-chesnais/39/168/7b5 ) of this guy just shouts that he's never worked for the mainstream publishers, but a series of shell companies trying to convince under-educated investors to part with their cash.

There is a ton on innovation out there, none of it anywhere near this guy.

Notch refuses to certify Minecraft for Windows 8

Clive_Dunn

Er, for those ( like the people above ) it's pretty clear that MS wants to charge royalties for putting games onto Windows. Then they want to merge Xbox and PC gaming for the generation after 720 onto one platform and guarantee future revenue streams on both platforms.

Meanwhile Sony are fighting a losing battle to keep consoles relevant, Nintendo are trying to grab the top console spot through superior owned IP hampered by poor technology, and Valve are threatening to release a linux based PC to stop MS grabbing a chunk of their revenue.

Welcome to the 21st century hardware battle. It's a mess really.

CA: Total War would be "really stung" by reviewers if multiplayer went

Clive_Dunn

I'm struggling to understand why you require "'metacritic analysis" when the Total War series is just copying and pasting the same old formula for the past 15 years. I guess you need to keep multiplayer in so it masks the lack of evolution this game has had, but it seems to me the core game mechanic is more than a bit creaky these days and that seems to be supported by ever declining sales since Rome.

Next Xbox requires an always-on internet connection - report

Clive_Dunn

Not quite sure why you wouldn't believe this is true, both 1st and 3rd party have significant financial motivation in killing off pre-owned and piracy. I'm sure some parts of the world ( remote parts of Russia / Indonesia, or Skegness for example ) will claim they don't have access to broadband, but they never bought games anyway so the loss of those sales won't exactly hurt.

I'd also guess you'd put a requirement in for all games to be released on Live / PSN at the same time as retail, and potentially introduce a royalty rebate scheme to incentivise 3rd party to push download over retail by pricing aggressively.

The truth behind retailer-exclusive pre-order extras

Clive_Dunn

I think the article misses the key point behind the retailer specific DLC - publishers use it as a sell in tool as it makes getting that all important order from that retailer a bit easier to land ( especially as once it's agreed to do the promotion you've got a bit more leverage than normal ).

However for me, the whole thing is profoundly illogical. By definition you increase your dev costs and multiply your SKU count. Neither of these is preferable and therefore only justifiable by increasing total sell through. Does retailer specific DLC do this ? Does it fuck.

Also, by agreeing the DLC content you are pushing a more attractive SKU into certain retailers. Because of the numbers involved and the costs incurred, you agree this with the bigger retailers ( lets say Game and Amazon for example ). Both of these will have lower prices than everyone else because of their size, and now you've given them a preferential SKU as well.

So in effect you've not increased the total sales, but have promoted the sales through the customers with the lowest margin, thereby decreasing your gross revenue figures over time.

Basically it's lazy short term publishing at it's worst. Decisions are made not for the long term benefit of the publisher or franchise, but to hit a profit figure for the quarter or year.

It's all bollocks really.

Saturday Soapbox: Bring On The Next Generation

Clive_Dunn

For an industry currently struggling ( and failing in most cases ) to manage the development costs of current gen it would seem madness to introduce even higher costs into the equation.

It's all about barriers to entry, and the one constant ( well, with the very debatable exception of the Wii ) over the years is that every generational jump in hardware sees a proportional increase in dev costs. Those costs are the very thing that dampens creativity, as the riskier projects on paper never get greenlit by the major publishers.

Technology rarely promotes innovation, risk taking does, and the higher the risks the fewer willing to take them. Resetting the clock now by launching new hardware would effectively mean the next COD might look 50% better, but the $100 million dev cost ( plus the same for marketing on a new IP ) would preclude virtually all competition.

So in a way, what the article wants to happen will have pretty much the exact opposite outcome as hoped.

I'm hoping for no new hardware until 2013. I guess it'll just depend on how scared MS and Sony are about Apple though.

Game Group suffers from "extraordinary" economic times

Clive_Dunn

@nickthegun - I think we all understand the difference between e-tailers and traditional retailers. The issue here is that Game continue to struggle to define what area they want to excel at.

Currently they neither offer the range of product to be considered a specialist, or the pricing on the AAA games to compete with supermarkets or e-tail. Add in a dysfunctional online service and you've got a bit of a mess.

You don't have to compete in all areas, but doing a good job in one would be a nice start.
