I love Hanabi. I recently bought the physical game after enjoying it on Boardgamearena.

I think my copy (bought on eBay) might be a fake though - satisfy my curiosity - is the printing of the box not very straight? Even weirder, is one of the numbers on your red "1" cards slightly discoloured from all the others?

Lone Echo 2 will miss its August launch date, delayed to "later this year"

ChrisOTR

@rogueTempo Hey!

Yeah, your mileage may vary but a few things:
*I have a big thing about "thematic consistency" really mattering to me in story-based games. For me, Lone Echo felt like a consistent world and everything within it felt like it belonged. In contrast, for me Alyx just feels a bit random, a mish-mash of stuff that's cool but doesn't really gel into a believable world.
* Exploring the Kronos 2 felt amazing to me - it feels like the ship has been designed with some real thought. Having always enjoyed films with cool spaceships (Sulaco, Nostromo, etc), it felt amazing to explore one.
* I really liked the voice/mocap actor(s) for Liv, I found I cared a lot about her story.

I do think Alyx is a great game though, don't get me wrong!

Take your time, based on the quality of the first one, which I only recently discovered, I am hoping for a lot.

My favourite story-based VR game, significantly better than HL:A (for me, at least).

An Amiga 500 Mini is on the way

ChrisOTR

Probably an unpopular opinion but mini/micro/rerelease consoles are a pox.

We collectively binned millions of these machines years ago, and now we're making them again so we can do so all over again.

If you want to retrogame, do our environment a favour and use an emulator, or buy a second hand original machine and look after it for future generations.

Final Fantasy 14 redesigns an icon to stop triggering players' phobia of holes

ChrisOTR

Someone always appears in threads about trypophobia to invalidate people and tell them it's not a real thing. It definitely is, I suffer from it. Luckily it's fairly easy to avoid for the most part, except when it pops up randomly like in this case.

I haven't seen the FF14 icon... Thankfully!

Just to add more, it's not just holes (for me) - it's clusters of holes that look organic. Oddly not all of them though. For example coral, which you would think would be a no-no, is fine, for me.

My guess is it's a fairly logical revulsion to something that looks infected.

I'm making myself a bit sick just thinking about it, that's enough for now!

@cowell I've always hated games that have no thematic consistency... They tend to feel like someone just chucked in everything in the Unreal or Unity asset store in and gave it a stir.

BUT, that being said if you're going to do it you might as well be audacious, this does sound fun.

@wyp100 We, the gaming community, should always take the word "embargo" to mean that the thing/game/service is awful, until proven otherwise.

I know not everything embargoed turns out bad, but it's an anti-consumer practice, in my opinion. Essentially keeping your customers in the dark on purpose.

A fool and their money are easily parted. I don't have a huge issue with the individuals running the bot farm. I do have an issue with EA and other publishers who enable them to make money in this way, and with gamers who are so far from the light in terms of understanding what can make games great that they actually buy this crap.

@benjacobs That's an interesting point, thanks. However the difference is that there are many nightclubs, in many countries, and each can have a slightly different view of what is acceptable/cool/fun. The customer gets to contribute to the decision by voting with their money, or choosing not to.

Steam is a global monopoly, or very close to one, and it therefore has the potential to prescribe a single monoculture on its entire global userbase.

Fair?

For me, this is a tough one. I'm not sure where I stand.

I personally would not buy this game. It does sound pretty awful and not like it's contributing much value to the world, but I also think society is becoming socially very staid and traditional recently, and I'm not sure I want outlets of digital culture such as Steam being the arbiters of taste.
