Battlefield V battle royale mode in development - report

ChrisOTR

Unlike most other games, I think a battle royale mode might be a good fit for a Battlefield game.

Resident Evil 7's Xbox One X patch offers a big boost over the standard console

ChrisOTR

@CYCO_EIRE_54 Yeah it might do. In the next generation, they have a challenge on their hands making it integral to the system, yet optional for those that don't want it, and affordable yet not compromising the experience too much. It's like Kinect except this time the technology is actually good (in my opinion!)

@ChrisOTR Just to add, I really hope Microsoft brings a VR solution at E3. I love VR, and the more the merrier. More competition is better for everyone. If they ARE bringing VR soon though, they're doing a good job of stopping leaks...

I would take VR over fancier flat screen graphics any day of the week. Playing this through in VR was absolutely incredible, even on my launch PS4.

PlayStation VR is beginning to feel a bit like the Vita

ChrisOTR

Personally the majority of my favourite gaming experiences have been on PSVR in the last 18 months (Ultrawings, Batman, Driveclub online multiplayer, Wipeout VR, Farpoint, Skyrim VR, Superhot VR, Resident Evil 7)

(accidentally deleted the comment due to the new site design, so posting again)

@drxym I agree with what you wrote about Vita, but not what you wrote about PSVR. There are so many high quality games for it already. Also, I'm an extremely active PSVR player and I don't have a Pro. OG PS4 is fine.

WipEout on PSVR: an upgrade with no compromises?

ChrisOTR

@Mr_V Yeah you're right. I was a bit disappointed as well when I realised that all of the teams have effectively become "skins" in the VR version, but when I realised how much cool work they had done with the gimbal cockpits and the reason for it, all was forgiven. Hopefully the next Wipeout, whenever it comes, will have the best of both worlds...

Absolute masterpiece, in terms of gameplay, graphics, and VR adaptation.

The best example of the quality on offer here is that the devs have thought to adjust the ships' designs to include a fully functional gimballed cockpit to allow for the 3 comfort modes. Fantastic stuff.

@danieldeitermann Interesting, thanks. I read a really interesting article about games that have done a great job of creating pathos through an unseen story - "System Shock" is one good example.

@ChrisOTR Also, one other point about this - in my opinion the reason we are used to seeing "large scale" drama in computer games (exploding cities, crashing planes, etc etc etc), is because we have been technically unable to convincingly render "small scale" drama (human emotion).

As we become better at this, games will be able to be set in smaller, denser environments, without losing their impact. Less will need to be authored, because the quality of the experience is higher. This has already happened in cinema to some extent - some of the best sci-fi films are set in relatively small environments and yet they are entertaining because they are carried by the emotive human performances of those involved. I'm thinking of films like "Moon" or "Coherence".

@FilthyAnimal Respectfully I disagree - consider the combination of this kind of face capture in realtime in a multiuser environment, with other presence technologies (hand tracking, room-scale VR etc.) and you could have something truly transformative, with minimal need for developers to author the experience.

Human beings are quite capable of creating interesting narratives for themselves, given the toolset and a loose structure.

I'm not naive though - we are still miles away from the above, but it is great to see that there are people and companies out there slowly working through the challenges.

The free ones shouldn't be viewed as free at all. They are only there to get you familiar with looking in the store and sifting through the paid ones. If they were truly meant to be a free part of the game with no catch they would have been on the disk in the first place.

Kinect was amazing - in a museum

ChrisOTR

Motion controls were just a novelty pre-VR, but in the light of VR they can be revelatory (imagine Ultrawings-style control in a deep game world with Star Citizen quality graphics, in VR)...

Hopefully some of what Microsoft learnt from Kinect will help them enter VR with a splash. Competition helps us all.

Dying Light's year of free DLC continues with the Gun Silencer

ChrisOTR

I'm not criticising the game or this particular item at all, but I do think that several devs have got wise to the idea of giving away incredibly trivial add-ons and publicising them as "free DLC". I know it's unacceptable to criticise CD Projekt, but they have been guilty of this in the past. "Alternative Look For Ciri"-type things do not warrant the term "free DLC" in my opinion, and neither does a new silencer.

I am a techie in my day job. The last thing I want is to mess around with settings in the evening. I just want to get in the game. I want the developer to present the game in what they feel is the best way. If the performance is bad, I'll find a better game.

How the devs behind Driveclub plan to bring the arcade racer back to life

ChrisOTR

I played a LOT of Driveclub, Driveclub VR and Driveclub Bikes. All 3 are underrated and wonderful games.

That said Onrush isn't really appealing to me yet... for my tastes it looks like it has gone too arcadey, whereas Driveclub sat the middle ground and was in my opinion more simmy than people give it credit for.

Hopefully Onrush will have caught my attention by the time it arrives.

Disappointing final line there. VR sickness is enormously subjective, and many don't experience it. In my opinion you shouldn't be tarring games in this way, especially not before they're out.
