Need for Speed: Most Wanted vs. PlayStation Vita

Cheapshot

Let's not forget that this is a first generation Vita game being compared to a PS3 game wherein Criterion have the PS3 firing off all cylinders.

The Vita clearly has much more juice to give, especially considering that it has a quad core CPU, which can allow for all sorts of resource offloading.

Exciting times ahead.

I'd love to see more PS Vita content on Digital Foundry. It's a shame that you didn't mention how the PS Vita version of NFS: Most Wanted compares to the console versions in the face-off for that game - it's quite impressive!

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, Persona 4: Golden and Gravity Rush have convinced me to buy a Vita as soon as I get paid.

It's a seriously attractive machine that offers games far richer than phones - Sony just need to be a little more boastful about it... (the E3 no-show being a prime example).

In light of this, I hope Sony thinks twice before deploying such needlessly complicated, cryptic hardware in the PS4.

*edit* lol at the dislikes. I'm not trying to be a horrible troll here. As well as problems with their super ambitious AI programming, it's likely that the Cell's SPUs are giving Team Ico a major headache.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand - the visuals and attention to detail is utterly peerless; on the other hand, I could be sucked out of this world because of the unfeasible amounts of murder taking place here.

I want to be able to let that guy go who is begging for his life. For better or worse it feels like something I would do.

Shenmue 1, 2 HD to launch on PSN, XBLA - report

Cheapshot

About GODDAMN TIME!! Everybody buy this game, I beg you! It's a marvelous experience that captures the sensation of adventure and immersion better than almost every game on the market. It's a pioneer that introduced conventions that are still used today. You may laugh at some of the voice-acting, but Shenmue demands your respect.

Oh, and both games still look sublime -- walking through Sakuragaoka in the original Shenmue astounds me more each time I witness it. I cannot figure out how something so intricate in detail runs on the Dreamcast.

This can only have a knock-on effect on the possibility of Shenmue 3. Sega, why are you so sexy at the moment?

Face-Off: Street Fighter x Tekken

Cheapshot

You didn't compare input latency? This is hugely important to fighting game afficionados like myself, dammit!

It's such a pain when you go to tournaments that use a different console and find that your combos don't work until you get used to the difference. PS3 Street Fighter 4 had 2 frames of input delay more than the 360 version, and this game uses the same engine, so...

*flips the table*

Hironobu Sakaguchi: Fantasy Man

Cheapshot

You are a credit to videogame journalism, no question about it.

The story of Final Fantasy really is a bitter-sweet one - from a poverty-stricken guy trying to catch a break, to a blockbuster auteur with legions of fans, to an exercise in shareholder appeasement.

Hell, Sakaguchi's story would make for a better film than Advent Children and Spirits Within combined.

I bet it stings for Sakaguchi to see Square-Enix so afraid of its fans, that they're no longer willing to do anything progressive with Final Fantasy any more.

@hilts - I can understand why you didn't enjoy the first few hours; there's way too much exposition and hand-holding in the beginning. When the game gets settled in though, it is absolutely amazing -- so rewarding.

It's a shame the pacing wasn't a little tighter, too many people gave up near the beginning.

I like that the writer realises that the PS2 version is better looking than the Wii version. As well as the gaudy colours and weaker parchment filter, the lovely looking bloom lighting and other effects were completely absent on Wii -- The Wii doesn't quite capture Takeyasu Sawaki's original vision IMO.

The game was an absolute joy to play in the whole 60 hours I spent on it. I think the length was just right, in that I felt completely satisfied when I finished and have never felt the need for a sequel.

I'm so chuffed I still have the PS2 version and an SD telly lying around. I might boot it up again just to gawp at the visuals for a while. :)

Gravity Rush is the most exciting game of this year for me... and I have no means to buy a Vita right now. :'(

It's like Jet Set Radio literally turned on its head, with combat and RPG elements and side-quests, and a beautiful abstract dystopian world. I'm also impressed that its a launch title to boot - Vita has the strongest launch line-up I've seen since the original Xbox (which had almost everything you could possibly want on day one.)

Telling Tales: Skyrim and Dark Souls

Cheapshot

Fantastic article and I thoroughly agree. I've always thought that narrative with minimalism and nuance works best to gaming's strengths. -- that's the reason why IMO, Shadow of the Colossus, ICO and Silent Hill 2 are some of the best stories videogames have to offer.

Skyrim is just so overwrought and clumsy in comparison, but at least there's still a great game behind the archaic storytelling.

Ono: Street Fighter III scared off gamers

Cheapshot

Ono you arse! 3rd Strike is the best fighting game ever made BECAUSE it took dedication to master, I've been playing that masterpiece for 2 years solid on GGPO and still constantly learn new things every time I fire it up - Street Fighter 4 stops surprising you after about a week...

The reason it "alienated" people wasn't because of the depth, I mean it still has a simple moveset for the characters like SF4, any new player can pick it up and have a blast. The problem with SF3 was its timing; 2D was old hat during the 3D boom of that time, the casuals would always pick Tekken 2 over this. The completely new roster of characters probably didn't help either.

Give us a date on 3s Online already! -_-

Mirror's Edge still "important" for EA

Cheapshot

If any game needs a sequel, it's this. The first game was flawed genius, with so much potential; at the best of times it felt like the first person Sonic I never thought I craved. I didn't think DICE had it in them to make a game like this. They've toiled and made enough successful, identikit Battlefield games.

Give 'em a bloody chance EA and prove you're not like Activision.
