@JoelStinty I hope you're all correct - Ori is my most played game on XBox after I spent six months getting a one-life playthrough. Would love to play it on the go!

@Malek86 Doubtful, unless it's released as part of Microsoft's plan to expand XBL. Ori was developed by Moon Studios, but it was funded and published by Microsoft Game Studios.

Picked it up last week - it's okay, but isn't as instinctive to get into as Beat Saber. There are some good tracks on there to start off though, Alison Wonderland and Donner Summer being particular standouts.

Will be keep checking in to see how it progresses!

Titanfall battle royale Apex Legends hits 10 million player milestone in just 72 hours

I've tried all BR games and couldn't get into them. My experience with this was similar trying it on solo and was ready to dismiss it as another game in the genre not for me.

Then I roped two of my WoW guildmates into trying it with me, and I weirdly entered a dimension where time has no meaning, and it was suddenly 2am. This game is incredible fun with friends - the ping system is an excellent addition to the game, the weapon upgrades and shield systems are easy to understand, and the shooting is what you'd expect from a Respawn game.

I've went from "Meh" to "I can't stop playing" in less than 48 hours.

@el_pollo_diablo In principal, yes, they are the same. The main difference for me is ease of access. A punter only has to click a couple of buttons to get their cards in FIFA, compared to going down the shops and handing over cash for a sticker pack.

Netflix sees Fortnite as one of its greatest threats

CaptainTrips

Every company that vies for consumer's leisure time should be thinking like this. There are only so many hours in the day, and if one activity is so good it is filling those hours entirely, then other entertainment falls by the wayside.

I remember when I was playing WoW vanilla I didn't buy another game for at least a year because it was all I needed in terms of entertainment. I didn't go to the movies or watch TV either - I was much more inclined to spend time with my guild.

Whoever they're hiring at Netflix that has the smarts to realise this should absolutely be kept in good employment.

Logitech gaming accessories reduced by over 50%

All of my PC gear is Logitech. Not only is there stuff good quality, their after-sales support is exceptional. I had a wireless gaming mouse that I loved which was starting to double-click out of warranty. I contacted their support to try and sort out a repair and they just sent me a new one without even asking for the original.

Really outstanding service.

50 game releases to look forward to in 2019

CaptainTrips

Ori is the big one for me this year. The first one was excellent with a few niggling issues. I played the demo at Gamescom and was delighted with the changes they've made - especially the online time trial mode, which suits the game perfectly.

I still have hopes for Trials, but I'll be holding off on my purchase until I can see how the MTX impact the game's design.

I very much doubt Metroid Prime 4 will get a release this year, but I'd love to see a remaster of the original trilogy while we wait!

Nice list! I made it into the quotes as well!

2018 was an incredibly diverse year for gaming. So much variety and choice on offer for everyone. I found some gems which I didn't think would interest me, and the big AAA releases were largely excellent.

So nice to see the smaller titles get some love alongside the big AAA releases.

Spider-Man and God of War in particular were very strong showings, but all of my favourite gaming experiences this year have been from either indie titles or VR games - Dead Cells, Moss, ASTRO BOT, Beat Saber, Tetris Effect and Into The Breach being particular standouts.

Such a fantastic year for gaming based on the sheer diversity of titles on offer. There really was something for everyone!

Ian's top ten best PSVR games of 2018

CaptainTrips

A great list.

Personally, Beat Saber blew me away. There's been a huge gap in my gaming world since over-saturation led to the death of the rhythm action genre, and seeing it revived so perfectly with Beat Saber has left me feeling so content.

I've asked Santa for an Oculus Rift for Christmas so I can dive into the modding community's work. I was a VR skeptic going into 2018, but now I honestly feel it's where the most innovative work is being done in game design.

@jonathanharding-rath I played it on PSVR and immediately ordered an Oculus Rift to experience more songs.

I saw in a comment below that you said it helped with your depression, and I can totally see why - the endorphin rush from coming off a session in that game is amazing. My smart watch clocks me in at about 400 calories burned per hours' worth of play.

How could Red Dead Redemption 2 improve on PC?

CaptainTrips

@Binba442 equivalent technical specs maybe, but you have to factor in optimisation for the platform, which wouldn't be a thing for a platform with infinite possible specs like PC.

Graphical updates aside, I'd like to see more customisation options for the awful, awful controls. Considering the game world is so huge and beautiful, moving around the place is such a chore with a control and aiming system from the early 2000s.

Great game, terrible control scheme.

Holy Roman Empire - Civilization 6 is $60 on iPhone

CaptainTrips

On the one hand I like the idea of a game developer putting a fully-fledged and complete title on the app store without any IAPs, but ultimately I think their pricing strategy is well off, and could lead to poor sales.

Regardless of what Firaxis think their game is worth, the simple reality is that the mobile market has a very different pricing structure to console and PC. There is an equilibrium to be found in every market whereby the price of a product is desirable enough to shift an optimal amount of units, and given the pricing of the competition (even their own games like XCOM are much cheaper than this on mobile) this feels a bit too high to me - they could have probably made more money by shifting more units for a lower price.

But maybe they've done their market research and this will sell - will be interesting to see!

CaptainTrips

Esports still need to become more accessible to casual spectators

CaptainTrips

I agree that certain Esports need to be more accessible, with the most obvious barrier to entry being the complexity of the games in question. Even a relatively simple shooter like Overwatch has map strategies and abilities which are hard to understand for the casual viewer.

The one exception to this rule for me - and therefore, in my opinion, the best Esport to watch - is Rocket League. It takes a globally loved sport like football and adds a video game twist to it. Everyone who watches understands the concept of putting a ball into a net, and it's easy to see when an impressive play is made.

If I were a developer looking to create a game that's a viable Esport, that would be the game I'd choose to model mine from.
