Nintendo Europe closing Großostheim headquarters, 130 jobs lost

Camorrista

Großostheim has strictly been warehouse and some offices, localisation is done in Frankfurt.

nintest is right in that 190-ish people got laid off in Frankfurt, all of them translators and testers. These are leasing staff, which is why they've conveniently been ignored in the announcement. I don't know, that should cut localisation staff in half maybe?

There will be a major focus on outsourcing localisation, they've been doing it for a few years already. Titles like Fire Emblem 3DS were outsourced, and all the e-manual work is outsourced too.

If you're not blind and obtuse, it should be obvious that localization is going to be axed completely in favor of outsourcing to Pole to Win, a sort of semi-independent Japanese company Nintendo feeds projects and money to, and maybe other agencies.

The problem is that NOE localisation has been following the motto "experienced staff to make up for minimum expenses and outdated workflow". They're in for a rough awakening when they start relying purely on outside companies while still stuck in the 90's in terms of localisation tools and dev workflow.

Evolution addresses DriveClub micro-transactions concern

Camorrista

"It's a system identical to that used in Evolution's 2012 PlayStation Network game MotorStorm RC, and there were no complaints"

Probably because many people deleted the game in disgust after being flooded with "OH NO YOU CAN'T HAVE THIS NOW GIVE US MONEY" cars/tracks/tournaments in every single damn menu.

If you want to squeeze cash out of players, at least learn some subtlety.

I'm just kicking myself here because I fell for the Eurogamer Weekend Genderpolitics Clickbait Story once again.

You know, Ellie reviews or articles about How Your Game is Problematic and Creepy, posted with laser precision on Fridays around lunchtime.

Sigh.

Ryse: Son of Rome review

I'm sincerely happy Oli is calling out the absolutely reprehensible use of violence in this game.

It's not even used to punctuate. Either the entirety of Crytek doesn't mind seeing thousands of dudes slashed in never-seen graphic fidelity, or there's some really disturbing shit going on in their CEO's head. You know, the dude who signs the game with his damn name in the opening credits.

tnt, I think you're confusing usernames or something.

Tales of Monkey Island: Season 1

Camorrista

Smelly, I think it would be possible. After all, they're already re-using locations and characters, so even with 2D art the artists' workload would decrease after episode one. Plus, it's not like part 3 had Disney-quality animation.
I'm kinda imagine MI3 with a non-saturday morning cartoon art style, maybe trying more for the Steve Purcell-look. Oh well, it's all idle talk anyway. I'm sure the game is nice, all the graphics talk is just side entertainment.

Tony Hawk: RIDE

Camorrista

While I'm shocked that a game that has nothing positive going for it and simply doesn't work still gets an impressive score of 40 % (pretty much like that 5/10 Wii singing game, also reviewed by Ellie), it makes me happy to read this review:
Every time EG calls out a company for greedy, backhanded sleazery like this they deserve to be lauded, and every time they dare to - rightfully - analytically tear apart a heavily advertised, shoddy, embarrassing mess from a big publisher, they gain some integrity and credibility.

Good job, Ellie and EG.

Rabbids Go Home

Camorrista

I was smiling like an idiot while reading the review. There's genuine talent behind the Rabbid franchise, and it's delightful to see that it doesn't limit itself to graphics and animations.

The thing that might interest me the most is the whole satirical aspect. I love how all the humans seem to be neurotic, repressed, petty, stupid... and pretty ruthless when they have the power.
