GDC live report: Sony's "Future of Innovation" is VR

@nuithoth Indeed, that was the more serious side to my point =) I don't think the turnaround on Oculus hardware is going to be a great deal different to whatever Sony do. Perhaps 1 or two 2 new versions until Sony iterate too.

The story of Net Yaroze, Sony's first indie push

Bigglesworth

The Net Yaroze came along at the perfect time. The popular home computer formats that supported bedroom development were dying out, PCs were a frankly nightmarish environment for gamedev, and console gaming was booming. NY was the doorway into the previously walled off world of console development.

I actually think this is quite self-aware of them. There was a lot of nerdgasming when Lightning first showed up, to the extent that people were doing facial morphs between her and Cloud. I think this is a bit of harmless fanservice with a side-helping of humour.

Off topic, but it saddens me to keep seeing The Spirits Within so casually and 'fashionably' derided. No one can dispute it was indeed a commercial failure, but the critical reception was mixed at worst and, from a technical perspective, it remains one of the best CGI movies to date.

@Dizzy Thanks for the link, I'll take a look.

It's not really about numbers of players though, is it. It's about the computational load demanded by each game; that's what's supposed to make this different from any previous use of dedicated servers.
1 0

Bigglesworth

@Dizzy You seem authoritative, so I'll address this to you:

So Azure has more than 300,000 physical servers? I scanned WikiP and the Azure site but didn't find hard numbers, but I'll accept that for argument's sake.

Since this is the case, the fact that one of the few details MS have stuck to is the "300,000" figure means we must assume indicates a maximum allocation from the larger Azure pool?

So I'm left wondering how many of these 300,000 servers any one game has access to. It's scalable, but up to some maximum presumably, or does it depend on the usage levels of all other connected games? Its pretty certain that no one game is going to get access to all 300,000, so using that figure almost as a USP is a little disingenuous.

What sort of ballpark number is even reasonable? Let's say 1,000. That sounds a little low after all the talk of 300,000, but even so, if each game has 1,000 servers, that implies that after 300 games are up and running, the One's Azure allocation is full.

There's still far too much uncertainty about this whole concept to get even remotely excited about it.

@Yautja_Warrior The only response I've seen from such advocates that ever made any sense was that it made symmetrical sense for your thumbs to overlay the left stick and the four face buttons.

Maybe this was fair comment several years ago, but games are much more likely these days to have you using the two sticks simultaneously along with the triggers. The symmetry argument in that respect no longer makes sense.

@rotmm : Your assesments of Indy's and Drake's characters seem a bit off to me =)

Indy is a damaged character, a brawler, thief and overall unpleasant human being. Yes, he is charming when needed, and of course he has the alter-ego (kind of like his Clark Kent) of being a professor.

An unpleasant human being with a split personality? Hmm. Indy is the quintessential 'charming rogue'. Yes, a brawler and a thief, with the mild misogyny of the era, but also intelligent, honourable and emotional.

Drake, on the other hand, is portrayed in the cutscenes are a nice guy, one who's not quite sure why he's actually there [...], one who is thouroughly decent and reasonable.

Drake is almost a carbon copy of Indy, every bit a brawler and thief, if perhaps more a womaniser than a mysogynist. I'm not sure where you get the idea that he is basically a 'nice guy' though. Yes he's just as charming and honourable as Indy, yet he consistantly proves himself a traitorous and backstabbing employee, and an untrusting (if not untrustworthy) friend. Drake is out for what Drake can get, and it doesn't seem to matter who gets hurt along the way.

I think some people are confusing 'story' and 'storytelling'. The Uncharted games' stories may not be shining examples of originality and subtlety, but their storytelling is first rate. That said, I wouldn't claim they are the standout studio in this regard; Ninja Theory are every bit as good.

The sales performance of XIII was undeniably good. Unfortunately, the baying mob of dyed-in-the-wool fantards who are afraid of change will probably cut off their collective noses to spite their faces; hurting the sales of a game that would probably be much more to their liking, and leaving Square even more confused as to what their 'fans' actually want.

@spekkeh But going from an OO programmed world to your efficient storage (and the saving of your game is only allowed to take a few seconds tops) seems nigh on impossible to me.

This is just an issue of serialization, a fundamental of data I/O. I fully accept that there intricacies in the Skyrim code that our idle speculations and estimates don't even approach, but at the end of the day, this isn't rocket science*.

This is interesting in that it suggests that sooner or later, this problem is going to affect the 360 game, too. However, it doesn't explain why the savedata file is growing to such proportions only on the PS3 version of the game. Do PS3 players simply interact with more objects? I don't think so.

I still stand by my initial comments on savedata size, especially after gaining this insight into how the engine saves data. Something is not right if the savedata is climbing into tens of megabytes; certainly not if the data is growing at different rates on different platforms.

Players report Skyrim PlayStation 3 patch out now

Bigglesworth

One thing I've noticed over Oblivion is that dead creatures/bandits/assorted mobs remain long after they've been killed.

I've worked on a number of savedata systems over the years, ans I still find it mind-boggling how large the save data apparently is for this game.

Using the above example, lets allocate a generous 10 bytes per killed item, and naively assume linear growth over an increasing collection. We could store 1000 killed items in less than 10 kilobytes! What is consuming so much data?

Very odd how it was hard to discern any dynamic shadows, outside of a few scenes in the last 40 seconds or so. They seemed much more prominent in the first video - is a PC/console difference?

And nice as these timelapses are, for me it mainly served to highlight the artificial nature of the directional light from the sun. Odd that they would simulate the planet's rotation enough to move the stars and move the moons in arcs, yet not curve the path of the sun.
