FIFA 18 physical launch sales down 25% from last year

BigDaddy82

Not bought it this year, physical copies are way too expensive, approaching almost 50 everywhere for a yearly iteration on a game is ridiculous. I remember a few years back it was available at 25 in most supermarkets at launch, which is a much more reasonable price.

@Shakey_Jake33 Which games are you referring to as an avalanche? I had a look on simply games at the pre-orders and there's a handful of titles on there still, mostly rubbish or re-runs. Asking as at some point I may pick up a Switch but not until it comes with some decent content.

Dirt 4 review

BigDaddy82

I'm one of those crazy people who loved the more 'fun' aspects of the previous Dirt games, and I'm surprised to read this and other reviews stating that those seem to have been neutered for this one, in favour of the more serious Dirt Rally approach. I thought the point of Dirt Rally was to split the series in order to appease the more vocal members of the community, giving us one hardcore rally sim and leaving the main Dirt series to be over the top fun for the rest of us? A shame that it seems to not be the case. Where's the Trailblazer mode at least? Some of the best times in Dirt 2 and 3 were to be had blasting through the Moroccan desert or the icy Swedish landscape. Disappointing Codies.

Only skipped through the video but I didn't see any x-ray killcams in it, is this a co-op thing still? I asked about this about a year ago and a community manager came on to say that this time they actually had x-ray killcams in co-op (something the previous games sorely lacked) and unfortunately this doesn't look to be the case. Or can someone point one out to me (as I said, didn't watch the whole thing properly)

Mass Effect Andromeda developers reassure fans after trailer sparks animation concerns

BigDaddy82

@jimhalbert It's not developers trying to screw you over. Trust me those guys will be working their assess off to try to get this up to quality - it's the publishers that determine the release dates and the tight schedules they have to work to (including lots of crunch normally) that results in unpolished games coming to market. It's also not the developers that much of your money goes to.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's campaign is slick, morbid and a bit dull

BigDaddy82

@kwarive Fair point, though I was more specifically referring to the MP. I'm one of those who is begrudgingly picking this up just to play the remaster of MW4, I'm fine with all the movement mechanics in Titanfall as it's a game made for that purpose, but with COD it feels retrofitted and tacky and I'm just a sucker for the old boots on the ground gameplay

@_LarZen_ They do attach importance to them though to calculate their final score, I don't work there but I'm pretty sure that's how it works. I presume it's to stop just anyone starting up a website, writing a review and have it majorly affect the final score
0 0

BigDaddy82

@_LarZen_ I'm just explaining how metacritic works mate, it's actually a fact that larger sites like IGN carry more weight with their review scores applied to the overall total than smaller sites. Eurogamer used to carry weight there too until it ditched the scoring system.
1 0

BigDaddy82

@_LarZen_ The game is only scored that high on metacritic as the smaller review sites are the only ones to express their opinion so far. Once sites like IGN, Polygon etc get involved (the ones that have more weight) the score will go down, provided those reviews are negative. I'd expect the IGN one to stay around 7.7 or 7.8 - it's good but not great considering how good the reviews for COD used to be. They really need to ditch this space/sci-fi direction asap

Why are the missions actually dull though Edwin, it's not explained? I'm not doubting you, I'd just like further context on that statement, out of interest. Is it just the over familiarity of this series?

Crytek's PSVR game Robinson: The Journey is due next month

BigDaddy82

@xaml I didn't downvote you as it's a valid question, but the reason for it will be because they've made it as a VR game and not a regular one. Everything they designed in it was to cater for VR - you can't just port that to PC and say it's the same game. It's like asking why can't a mobile game be released on PS4.

I hope you can see the x-ray kills in co-op this time. I kind of enjoyed playing through the last one with a friend but because there was that restriction I didn't end up seeing any x-ray kills in my playthrough, and that's sort of what this game is all about.

Forza Horizon 3: still the only racing game for everyone

BigDaddy82

I did enjoy the first and second game but the second in particular was quite grindy for the second half, being forced to road trip to places you've been to multiple times to take part in races that all seemed a but samey in the end, I think they could have condensed it and not just dragged it out for the sake of it. Still looking forward to this one, hopefully it has less of that grind

@SpronyvanJohnson I suppose at this point they're more keen on showing they made a competent game than anything else. Also most people won't be able to spare the time to finish the whole thing this weekend - and it can take 20-30 hours to get through it all on hard anyway. Most games can be rushed through in a matter of hours.

@kangarootoo You may have missed my sarcasm. Yes, it's very complicated is my point, and it's naive to think they could have just 'sat down and said this is too buggy to release', the game was already delayed multiple times and they were no doubt under pressure from the publisher to release at this time, regardless of the state of it. Games development is rarely that black and white.

People only see the final product but don't see everything that went into it. I feel sorry for the devs at times like this, it's clear they were just too ambitious with this title, it's like a Ubisoft game but as he says it was just a small team working on it (and Ubisoft has 100s of people). I've played the game and they need to patch the bugs and issues with it but it's not as bad as the critics are making out. At least the EG review was relatively fair in that sense.

EA dev chief initially rejected World War 1 setting for Battlefield

BigDaddy82

This is why relying on a single, out of touch voice at the top of a company for major decisions can be a bad thing, it shouldn't have been the case that DICE had to make a demo to prove this idea to him, he should know the way COD has been going and the negative fan reaction to it and should have jumped at the chance to go back to the world wars

@MrTomFTW I presume you are referring to the co-op beta. I feel a bit sorry for these guys as that beta was clearly a pure beta, not like the glorified demos of most games nowadays (The Division for example). They said themselves it was purely to stress test servers and was from a build that was around 7 months or so from release. Yeah, it was rough, but surely forming opinions of the final game based on that is wrong. I'll wait for the reviews of the final product.

The new Hitman looks like the Blood Money follow-up you've been waiting for

BigDaddy82

@A_FAN I guess I'm not sure, maybe it would give them more polish time on the content they hold back, a bit like getting to the release date for a game that they feel could use a bit more work - this method allows them to release some of the content now and keep working on the rest so that the review scores don't suffer. It would also keep players locked into the game for a lot longer if they are waiting for monthly content, and would get around the issue (for the publishers) or trade-in's as the content is digital (I think). It's not like they'd be ripping us off and charging us more for anything this way though so it's not necessarily a bad thing if that's the case.
0 0

BigDaddy82

@UncleLou True, but to be fair we don't know if that's the case :) The majority of the content could be done, they're just going to hold it back (as opposed to releasing it straight away). It's certainly been long enough since the last Hitman game for them to have completed the full game after all. Just speculation though :)
