I think GoldenEye has aged pretty well... and those subtle, blurry N64 textures also seem to stand the test of time better than the heavily-pixellated PS1 titles...

And the game was dual analogue. Select 'Domino', swap the pads over, and hey presto - analogue movement on the left stick, analogue aiming on the right...

Digital Foundry vs Metro Redux

Maybe Rich can clarify in the article, but it states they found screen tear in the FMV cinematics. This presumably only means the intro video and end credits, as this is our only use of FMV. All in-game cinematics are done real time in engine.

Desert Fox: The Battle of El Alamein review

Bi50N

Although I do love this entry to the series, and it does introduce some new mechanics, I do feel there are diminishing returns if you've already got the other two. I think Drive on Moscow is objectively the best, but Battle of the Bulge was the biggest time sink for me as the first in the series...

I came here hoping for Metro 2033, but was prepared for disappointment - so that was a nice surprise :)

I knew as soon as I started working on Metro that that was the track for the launch trailer, and we very nearly re-used it for Last Light.

I wonder if...

Rymdkapsel set for Steam this month

Bi50N

I really enjoyed this game - your first play through is a little haphazard as you figure out how the varied economy works. On your second playthrough, you start to apply some strategy and see results. By your third, you are playing to win, and beyond you are playing to create the most aesthetically pure, economical station for the sheer pleasure of it.

It's a short experience, three playthroughs = about 2 and a half hours, but a great one. I think it is better suited to iPad rather than PC though.

As a lesson in simple game design, it is masterful.

Battle of the Bulge is really nothing like Advance Wars. It's turn based strategy that shares almost no mechanical similarities.

I must have sunk at least 500 hours into each edition of Advance Wars, but the original is still my favourite.

Although I am pretty sure it's in the 1st one only that the enemy AI is not affected by fog of war, which tarred the experience slightly...

Metro: Last Light removed from GameStop Impulse because of "uncertainty of delivery"

Bi50N

Yup, snowing today. We all went home early.

But in all seriousness Bertie - I honesty do not comprehend how you manage to extrapolate this:

"GameStop's casting doubt on whether Metro: Last Light will come out, which is worrying"

...from the quote you have been given from GameStop.

GameStop are not casting doubt on whether the game will come out. They might be doubting whether it's coming out under a THQ banner, which is rather different. How they act on that is their business.

But to suggest that a game that's been three years in development and is near completion might get canned because it's publisher is in a 'spot of bother' is just a bit of a wind up to everyone looking forward to it.

This game is coming out one way or another. I spent most of today playing our near-submission candidate, and it was, frankly, fucking glorious.

Probably the most compulsive iPhone game I've played to date, it manages to be superficially 'casual' but disguises a brutally hardcore, classic arcade challenge experience in the same vein as Geometry Wars. Live-action Metro: Last Light teaser trailer

@Martysek123 What we showed last year was specifically chosen to show how we'd addressed the combat mechanics of 2033. I think you'll see a lot more of the Metro you remember in... ooh, a few days? This is not a westernised sequel...

Metro: Last Light live action film teased

Bi50N

We patched in a superior control system for the 360 version - assuming you have the title update, you can go to Settings and change Inventory from Linear to Circular. This adds a weapon wheel to the 'Y' button when you hold the button, and allows you to quick-select the knife with a single press. Far more intuitive, and really improves the combat. We've learnt a lot since, and Last Light uses an evolution of this scheme.

Microsoft cancels Inside Xbox in Europe

Bi50N

What will happen is this - Dan and Andy will, within weeks, set up their own company, continue to make great content free from the constraints they worked under at Xbox. They'll make squillions from YouTube ads and, in an ironic twist of fate, will end up selling their independent programming back to Xbox, (and PSN and countless other channels). Good luck to them too.

App of the Day: Total War Battles: Shogun

Bi50N

Thanks for all the suggestions... I'll check them out tonight.

I realised that 15 - 20 hours claim was probably due to the fact that I have two games running concurrently, one on the phone, one on the pad depending on whether I'm travelling or at home. Although that suggests it's a) equally playable on both devices and b) good enough to warrant two play throughs... Plus I'm obsessive about doing all the side missions...

I've been addicted to this for a fortnight now, it's surprisingly deep. Given I've got at least 15 - 20 hours out of it already, not felt the need to pay for any XP (relying instead on the side missions) and appear to be barely half-way through the campaign, 5 feels like pretty extraordinary value too...

Interesting Sequels of 2012

Bi50N

@Bradach yup, we're working closely with NVIDIA on a lot of stuff, including 3D vision. The main reason why Metro looks so good in 3D compared to other games is the sheer amount of geometry the 4A engine pushes - the team typically models to the smallest detail rather than throwing on a texture to simulate depth / detail. Plus the sheer amount of true volumetric effects - smoke, sparks etc.

Why the Call of Duty brand can't compete with Star Wars

Bi50N

Actually, the inflation-adjusted global box office receipts from the six Star Wars films comfortably outstrips the combined retail sales of all 12 or 13 Call of Duty titles combined. Inflation adjusted US box office receipts for all six films totals close to 5 billion alone. Global receipts are likely to be in excess of 10 billion.

Looking to a more recent example, one film - Avatar - took 2.7 billion at the box office alone - almost half COD's entire retail total.

Once you factor in the DVD and sub-licencing (including Paid for and free TV broadcasting), Avatar is likely to have generated significantly more revenue than the entire COD series put together, even factoring in DLC and second hand sales.

Going back to Star Wars - if we look at merchandise (toys, videogames etc), and media spin-offs (animated series, books), the Star Wars brand is probably worth 10 to twenty times the COD brand at a minimum.

Star Wars is a popular cultural phenomenon which is why Darth Vadar can appear in adverts for Volkswagon and Comet without alienating a mass audience.

The only gaming brands close to touching Star Wars' equity and ubiquity might be Super Mario and Angry Birds.

The spokesman for Brand Analysis is generally spot on.

COD's success is a stunning (and deserved) achievement, but our industry should really stop obsessing over the sales numbers because at present all they do is highlight how (relatively) niche we are as an industry, and how (relatively) weak we are at brand building.

The Xbox is 10 years old today

Bi50N

Incredible to think that, when it launched here in the UK, the Xbox had probably the best launch line up of any console before or since, in terms of quality and breadth.

Halo, PGR, Jet Set Sadio Future, Dead or Alive 3, Amped, Rallisport Challenge and Oddworld - that's a lot of genres covered by some truly excellent games
