Asus Strix GTX 1070/GTX 1080 O8G review: high-end SLI tested

Bagpuss

Okay, as the owner of a 970SLI rig for the last two years can I just say that SLI is the fucking bomb.

..and anyone who says otherwise is doing it wrong.

All the major titles in the last 3yrs or so have great SLI scaling, BF4, GTA V, Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, Project Cars and loads more.

All of the above can be run at 'High' or 'Ultra' settings @1440p and give a rock solid 60fps.

Or I can run anything @4K locked to 30fps or 50fps.

Going 970SLI has meant that I still have enough performance today in the latest titles to sit out the current overpriced Pascal generation and I would only consider replacing them for a 1080Ti, which should give roughly 50% more performance than my two 970's, but more likely I'll hold fire until the 2017 Pascal refresh or even maybe Volta if they don't impress me.

People who slag off SLI have either never tried it or were never setting it up correctly.

Battlefield 1's campaign might be more interesting than its multiplayer

Bagpuss

I really don't know why Dice even bother with these bolt on afterthought campaigns in their Battlefield games.

They've all been rubbish, by the numbers corridor shooters without exception, destined to be either forgotten or completely ignored by the players, and this will be as well.

Battlefield is about multiplayer, end of story.

Save the money you waste on a superfluous single player campaign and give the people some free extra Maps and unlocks so you don't end up splitting the player base with EA's greed.

Bagpuss

I could live with 30fps...if 30fps on pc was the same as 30fps on consoles.

It's not.

30fps on pc looks and feels horrible in comparison to a console 30fps.

The pc simply does not allow for a 'smooth' experience like it does on console because of fundamental Direct X driver limitations.

30fps on pc looks and feels like 25fps on console.

It's probably just the lack of true hardware level Async compute units on Nvidia hardware coming into play.

Not surprising, as it was developed on Xbox One, whose weak sauce GPU relies on Async compute to make up for the lack of grunt on the CPU side.

That and the fact DX12 is still a buggy POS for developers and will need at least another 2yrs before its in a fit state.

These remasters ran like dog shit on my PC (4690K & Nvidia 970), frame rates dropping down to the mid 30's then jumping back to 60fps all over the place when CPU & GPU usage were in the low 30%.

After 2hours trying every conceivable setting in the Nvidia control panel to fix it, without success, I gave up and deleted them, I'll stick to the originals which run as smooth as anything.

Those with a little more sense will turn to alternatives, lowering Apples sales, costing them more than the price rise yields and learn them the lesson that you can only treat UK consumers as a treasure Island cash cow idiots for so long before people say enough is enough.

Of course the type of dicks crying about this are those most likely to be still crying about Brexit into their expensive coffees, and yes that includes all you cry baby Eurogamer staff, which makes all this a double joy for me.

Emulator Dolphin can now boot every GameCube game

Bagpuss

@Bludsh0t

When it comes to Dolphin, CPU speed is FAR more important than having a super powerful GPU.

Intel i5 or i7 running at least 4Ghz is really needed for all games to run at 60fps.

Any mid range GPU from the last 5yrs will run Dolphin games with ease.

It's only when you start upscaling them past 1080p that you need more power, for example I can run Dolphin games at 4K resolution on my Nvidia 970 and it hardly stresses the card, see below, Soul Calibur 2 @4K and GPU usage is less than 50%:

Despite appearances you aren't playing an arcade perfect version in Mame

They've had to downclock the CPU speeds in CPS2 games because of unemulated wait states in the Capcom hardware Mame driver.

:)

Also, the official version of Dolphin still has that terrible stuttering in it because of shader caching, making many games unbearable to play IMO.

Use the unofficial 'Ishikura build' which has 99% fixed the stuttering by using asynchronous shader compiling, yes it's a rather dirty hack way of doing it, but at least the likes of F Zero and Metroid Prime now run smoothly.

The battle to fix Britain's internet heats up

Bagpuss

A consistently reliable & stable connection is far more important to me than outright speed.

Once you get over 100mb, the bottleneck is the site servers you connect to, not your connection.

I have a 200Mb Virgin connection and whilst download speeds are a rock solid 25MB a second and no game on Steam takes more than 30-45mins to download, browsing the web is no faster than when I had a 50Mb Fibre connection with BT, however that connection was prone to dropping in severe weather and at times it could be unusable.

Like I said, a reliable stable connection is more important than speed IMO.

..Oh, and all the ISP's are rubbish with Youtube, thanks to their throttling policies when it comes to that site.

Forza Horizon 3 PC specs revealed

Bagpuss

12GB RAM, 4GB VRAM and a 3.6GHz CPU also come as recommended.

As for graphics cards, you'll want an NVIDIA GTA 970 or 1060, or an AMD R9 290X or RX 480.
So, it only needs about six times as much CPU/GPU power & 300% more RAM to play on the PC compared to an Xbox One.

Yeah..riiiiight.

I assume those are the recommended specs for 4K @ 120fps...

Bagpuss

@VEGA

There's no such thing as 'fast sync' with SLI systems.
0 0

Bagpuss

@vegard

But I can't help thinking that 30fps on PC seems "choppier" than 30fps on a console, even with a framerate limit set in RivaTuner.
Console development tools give lower level access to GPU timings than is available in Windows & Direct X.

'Half refresh rate' frame limit selected in the Nvidia control panel, combined with a 30fps lock in Riva Tuner is as good as it gets on PC when it comes to locking demanding games to 30fps, but its still not as good as console developed titles locked to 30fps.

So yes, 30fps on console is and does feel smoother than 30fps on a PC.

Digital Foundry has touched upon this very annoying fact in the past.

Bagpuss

I think he should have gone with the 1070 TBH, you can get an Inno 1070 with a decent aftermarket cooler on it for another 80.

300 is way too much for a 1060.

For that extra 80 you'll get an extra 30-40% performance and the option to add a second cheap 1070 for SLI in a couple of years, something which isn't possible with the 1060, as those tight bastards at Nvidia have removed the SLI bridge.

I went for 970SLi with my 4690k and two years later the system is still fast enough to play anything you throw at it, even the very latest titles like Tomb Raider will play at 1080p/60fps, meaning I can sit out this generation of overpriced Pascal cards entirely.

..even though the idea of a 1080Ti is tempting. :)
