Microsoft to clamp down on offensive language across Xbox Live, Skype, Office, everything

AHiFi

Bottom line is not: I can't swear to my friends in a private party.

The bottom line is: don't be a dick to strangers in a public manner.

Hence the usage of "public" in the Agreement. I'm sure the definition of that word can be debated over (given that the legal definition of a "public"conversation can often mean more than two people in a conversation), but I cannot see how in this context that a private conversation between friends would be considered "public" by any enforcement team.

If there was no distinction between private and public on these services, why even include the proviso of "public"?

You could always try and ask MS to get a copy of the guidelines that such an enforcement team are given when trawling through someone's data. I mean we're not talking about the Wild West of MI5 wire-tapping in the 1980s here... They'll have guidelines.

Besides, private parties aren't innocent either, y'know.

Ever had someone continually inviting you into a party who claims to be part of an LGBT group you're also part of?

And you join and are then verbally abused by a group of strangers because you are transgender?

And then that person who orchestrated this little operation is STILL on Xbox Live and STILL enjoying their 'content licenses' after committing what was, essentially, a hate incident or crime?

Well, the above would fall under Section 3A of the Code of Conduct (the same place quoted from in the article): "vii. Don't engage in activity that is harmful to you, the Services or others (e.g. transmitting viruses, stalking, posting terrorist content, communicating hate speech or advocating violence against others)."

So if that clarification helps better tackle the aforementioned groups, and threatens their ability to play their games unless they quieten down, then I can't say I'm too displeased by this change...

Shame you totally glossed that one over to focus on the critical non-issue of, say, "fucked your sister" being banned.

This one is for the bros:

@dogmanstaruk Sources get lost all the time. All it takes is for one, fairly well-known, website to accredit info to the wrong source and the others will copy that info. Verification and journalism don't go hand-in-hand in this world anymore. As a journalist, I've had it happen to me a few times (happened with EG once before, but that was because Blue's News didn't credit me) which is frustrating when you've worked hard to dig something out and genuinely bring fresh news rather than churn PR and wire copy.

The little 'swosh' noise when it jumped got me into a ridiculous fit of giggles. As did the way that cat jumps. I don't think I've ever seen a cat over-jump and I've owned one for most of my life. They live on the edge...of surfaces.

Eurogamer Readers' Top 50 Games of 2013

AHiFi

Why even include the readers' comments? Your reviews take the attention. We've already seen them in your original reviews, why not just a link or, at the most, a very short synopsis? Some were short, others were longer than comments from the readers. I tallied it up:

Words from/relating to Eurogamer staff: Approx. 3300
Words from/relating to Eurogamer Readers': Approx. 3500

Is it wrong to want to see more opinions from the readers? Am I the only one to see an imbalance here?

For those that think I'm talking nonsense, I took the top 50 from last year as a reference point:

Words from/relating to Eurogamer staff: Approx. 4300
Words from/relating to Eurogamer Readers': Approx. 9000

So a 23% drop in editorial contribution, but a 61% drop in reader input! Huh? 'Readers' Top 50', eh?

Surely you had far more comments to choose from? Why the brevity? Got to appeal to kids innit?

It's a more humble effort from Sony. Unfortunately for them, Microsoft got the PR jump on that stunt. So instead of making it grandiose, they just went with a few tweets which was probably the best response they could manage without appearing sarcastic.

40 minutes of Fast & Furious: Showdown you'll never get back

AHiFi

@dogmanstaruk Anecdote time. Six months previous to living in that flat, I was living in the 'Merchant City' - a stone's throw from George Square. Had a craving for cheese (white stilton with apricots) for some reason so journeyed down to shops before work to grab some.

After acquiring the lovely cheese and excited at the prospect of some cheese and biscuits before work, I decided to venture back to my flat. I came down the hill from Buchanan bus station towards George Square. Unfortunately, it was cordoned off. "You can't get through." Okay, I'll just go back up the hill and back down the next inshot. Up I go, down I go...more barriers. "Can I just get through, my flat is there", I plead as I point towards my flat. "No, no-one is allowed."

Dejected and pissed off, I decide to walk back up the hill and back down the next inshot to be met with a similar response. At this point, I was livid. Next inshot, no barriers.

Thank fuck! I journey down, not taking in that people weren't actually crossing the road at the end of the hill, nor that there were security guards standing there.

Ranting to myself, I walk straight onto the road. I hear some unpleasent noises to my right...

I turn to see a camper van speed towards me, followed by an enormous train of zombies. The brakes screech. Brad Pitt looks at me with confusion, I look at Brad Pitt. I show him the middle finger.

"FUCK YOU, YA BOURGEOIS BASTARD! I'M LATE FOR WORK!"

I walk off. About 20 minutes later, I realised what I had done. Had a wee chuckle. And ate my cheese and biscuits.

Morale of the story: Don't get between me and my cheese.

I used to live in a set of flats that overlooked the Clyde in Glasgow, right in the heart of the city. I sat on my balcony and watched as the stunt drivers for F&F6 crashed a car into a building - that the crew had constructed - at 3am. It was great! Yet it would appear that the only spectacular crash you'll see in the game is from it bugging out... A shame.

@Fox89 If we all did that though Fox, which I agree is the morally good stance to take, then we wouldn't question things half as much. I still have sympathy, but all that is needed to make me a donator are some documents. These are things I'm sure she could provide or show. Quotes from surgeon who was going to help her, even a video of them! There are all sorts of thing to help validate her claims.

Where are they?
6 2

AHiFi

@ZuluHero That was my initial thought. Not that that's bad, I have many TG friends, but the video didn't convince me, the lack of info doesn't convince me. Perhaps there is poisoning. But what if it were cheap breast implants and this story of a crash, which may well be true, is a cover for a poor choice?

I want to believe this is needed and she needs help, but the cynic in me is thinking that Homesick got some publicity out of this and the language use in the IGG before it was pulled was just appealing to the emotions, rather than being fact.

That post from the Indie Stone continues to ring alarm bells too.

Halo 4 trailer shows new glimpses at multiplayer

AHiFi

It looks vamped up, but at the same time I hope they don't scupper the magic of Halo multiplayer as we know it. That being said, it does look like they've taken a wiser approach when compared to Reach; not exactly savant levels, but certainly an improvement. I felt Reach veered too much from the Halo formula, whereas this has shades of Halo 2's multiplayer - which is a very good thing. But I guess that's not a shock since 343 are the progeny of Bungie.

@Hungry_Horace So now that we've pretty much got you told, let's breakdown the maths too:

GTA 55 - what happened to the other 51? Well we know about 4 and we know about 55, so that means that, by your...logic, there would actually be 50 games unaccounted for...

Further irony: 50 states in the US, often - but incorrectly - thought to be 51.
