Pokémon Sword and Shield Turffield Gym mission: how to herd Wooloo and beat Grass Gym Leader Milo

Our complete walkthrough for Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Turffield and your task to beat Milo are next up, as you finally face the Turffield Gym mission to herd Wooloo. The town follows on from Route 4 in your quest through Pokémon Sword and Shield's main story.

On each page of our walkthrough like this, we'll cover any and all of the obtainable Pokémon, item locations, trainers and their teams that you might come across here, as well as walking you through any key steps of the story, puzzles or challenges along the way.

Where applicable, note that our walkthrough pages will be down into separate sections referring to each of your visits to a given location, seeing as you often backtrack or revisit various places in your quest to become Galar League Champion. And of course if there are any, we'll clearly mark any spoilers, too!

Pokémon Sword and Shield Turffield: available trainers, items and Pokémon

The town of Turffield itself is a pleasant, countryside area, mixing ancient relics with a sparkling new stadium.

Hop will be waiting for you as you arrive, and he'll point out the stadium and mention that Sonia's nearby, up the hill just to the west. Her Yamper will turn up and show you the way - just head left from the Pokémon Center and it's not far at all.

You won't be able to enter the stadium yet, as Team Yell are blocking the path, so explore what you can of the town and then go see Sonia!

Up the top of the hill she'll show you the huge geoglyph, a giant marking on the side of the big hill up ahead, that seems to be of a kind of dynamaxing Pokémon - does it have anything to do with the Darkest Day? That moment in Galar's lore Sonia explained to you back in Motostoke? Either way, Sonia will give you Milo's League card and two revives, and you're now able to go and challenge the Turffield Gym.

Note, too, that there's a little girl in pink up on this hill who'll offer you a riddle. For the answer, head to our page on the Turffield treasure standing stones riddle solution - otherwise, collect the items dotted around town and prepare to face the Turffield Gym!

Pokémon Sword and Shield Turffield Gym mission: how to herd Wooloo and beat Grass Gym Leader Milo

Inside the Gym, there's a small boy who'll trade you a regular, Kantonian Meowth for your Galarian Meowth, if you caught a spare one back on Route 4 - it's worthing noting that you can get a can get a Kanto Meowth that can Gigantamax through Mystery Gift, however! We explain how in that linked guide.

Now, on to the challenge. Talk to the woman in green up ahead to start the Gym Mission.

Turffield Gym Mission solution:

You need to herd three groups of Wooloo to complete the mission! The first is easy: just run towards them and they'll roll away from you - run left or right to make sure you get all of them moving in the same direction, and when you get all 20 to the hay bales in the end zone, you'll break through into the next area, and face your first battle.

In the second area there'll be another trainer, two low walls in the way, and a pesky Yamper that scares off your Wooloo if it gets too close. We found going left with the Wooloo straight away was the easiest solution. Optionally double back to the battle the trainer - we always recommend that you do, for the experience - and then continue to phase three.

The third phase is the trickiest. There are now four walls, two Yamper and a trainer. It's likely your Wooloo will get split up by the Yamper here, but don't panic. Just herd as many as you can in groups to the end zone, and come back for another group, and repeat until you have all 20 in the end zone. Battle the trainer along the way, and then it's time for the main event!

You can heal up at this point too, if you like - you're free to exit the Gym Mission and, as you've completed it, it'll stay completed when you return. Go heal up the Pokémon Center if you fancy, then prepare your strongest Pokémon with Fire, Flying, Bug or Poison attacks to take on the battle with Grass-type Gym Leader Milo.

How to beat Grass Gym Leader Milo

Fire, Flying, Bug and Poison-type attacks are super effective against Milo's Grass-type Pokémon. Flyin, Poison, Bug, Steel, Fire, Grass and Dragon are all resistant to Grass-type attacks, meanwhile - although Milo's Pokémon do know some non Grass-type moves, so that won't leave you completely protected.

Either way, Milo isn't too much of a challenge. He only has two Pokémon, and will Dynamax his second, the Eldegoss, when he brings it out. Save your Dynamaxing for when you see the Eldegoss come out, and you should be all good. A Corvisquire - evolved from Rookidee - is a great shout here, as is a Carkol if you evolved a Rolycoly from Route 3 or the Galar Mine. Even better, if you picked Scorbunny for your starter you should be sorted already.

Defeat Milo and you'll get the Grass Badge from him, as well as TM10 Magial Leaf from the League Staff member at the reception and the Grass Uniform too.

You can now catch Pokémon up to Level 25, thanks to that Grass Badge, so Pokémon up to that level will no longer appear as very strong-looking Pokémon, which is neat!

With that, you're done here in Turffield for now, so continue on to Route 5 for the next steps in your quest, or cycle back to our main Pokémon Sword and Shield walkthrough and guide hub for all the other pages we have like this.
