Pokémon Sun and Moon - Melemele Grand Trial, Kahuna Hala battle, Ride Tauros, Ten Carat Hill

Our complete walkthrough for every step of your latest Pokémon journey.

Now that you've tackled your first Trial with Ilima, found Lillie in Melemele Meadow on Route 3, and and worked your way back to Route 1 from there, it's time for your first Grand Trial against Melemele Kahuna Hala!

This is also the time you get access to the Ride Tauros with the ability to smash breakable rocks, and so you can now access the rare Pokémon up at Ten Carat Hill and beyond!

Kahuna Hala Grand Trial battle

Having exited Route 3, it's now time to take on Kahuna Hala in the first Grand Trial of your Island Challenge. You'll find him back at Iki Town, using Fighting-type Pokémon as his specialty.

TM45 False SwipeFrom Prof. Kukui, after defeating Hala

Hala's Crabhammer is the one to look out for, thanks to it's own Z Move, All-Out Pummeling. We recomment Flying-type Pokémon, like Rowlet/Dartrix if you chose them as a starter, Oricorio from Melemele Meadow, or Spearow from Route 3. You could also use Psychic-types like Drowzee, but Abra/Kadabra will likely be too low level to actually use any Psychic-type offensive moves at this point.

When you manage to defeat him, you'll also be awarded the Z Crystal for Fighting-type moves, Fightinium Z, from Hala as a reward. You can also now use Pokémon up to Level 35, too, and Professor Kukui hands over TM45 False Swipe for you to put to use as well. Not bad!

Oh, and when you think it's all over, that troublesome Tauros turns up. Hala hands over the Ride Pager and Riding Wear gear, and you can now summon the Ride Tauros by pressing Y to open up the pager. Pressing B when riding Tauros will make it use Charge - which lets you smash rocks!

With that in mind, it's time to head on down to Ten Carat Hill, just off from Kukui's lab, to snag yourself some rare Pokémon and items before you move on to item number two. Quickly pay a visit to your Mum back home first, who heals your Pokémon, and then ride south!

Ten Carat Hill

Ten Carat Hill is an optional detour ahead of your trip to Akala Island, but it's a worthwhile one, thanks to some valuable items and the potential to catch some extremeley rare Pokémon.

Head down to the beachy area with Prof. Kukui's lab, and at the bottom left, through the area of long grass, you'll find some breakable rocks ahead of a cave entrance. Now you have the Ride Tauros with Charge, you can smash through them! Do so, and head inside to the cave. There, you'll find plenty of items and Pokémon, but keep on going until you get to the open area out the back of the cave path, as that's where the real good stuff is.

If you played the demo, you'll likely recognise this as the place where you photographed Jangmo'o and Hakamo'o. Sadly they're not available for now, but there's still a chance to get your hands on some rare Pokémon like Rockruff and Machop here, who both have some strong evolutions!

You'll have probably notice the large, immovable boulder on the inside of the hill before you get to the meadowy area. Come back when you have the ability to move boulders like that, which isn't for a while!

Next up, it's time to head to the Hau'oli City Marina and catch a boat to Heahea City on Akala Island!
