Nintendo seeks to convert iOS games onto Wii U - report

If you can't beat 'em, port 'em.

Nintendo is looking to expand its Wii U portfolio by adapting iOS software onto its fledgling console.

A "company source" told the Osaka Times that Nintendo is offering "professional-use conversion software" to game developers, so they can easily port their titles onto the struggling console.

According to the report, the idea is for converted iOS games to increase Wii U sales so that more popular titles can be developed for it.

This lack of hits on the Wii U has lead to its less than stellar sales and the company reported an operating loss of ¥36.4 billion (approximately £236 million or $366.3 million) for the year ending in March. This was Nintendo's second consecutive annual operating loss.

The question is, will iOS games really boost sales? One of the greatest appeals of iOS gaming is that it's cheap and convenient, so asking consumers to shell out loads of cash to play such titles on a TV doesn't exactly sound like a major system-selling strategy. Then again, it couldn't hurt to be able to play say, Waking Mars, on a big screen, so why not, eh?

We're checking into this with Nintendo and will update should we find out more.
