Nintendo 3DS eShop file size limit is 2GB

UPDATE: Team Meat backtracks on previous steakment.

UPDATE: A day later and Team Meat's Tommy Refenes has backtracked on his claim that the 3DS eShop file size limit is 2GB.

"Never said that 2GB was the size restriction on eShop," Refenes posted on his Twitter account. "I do not know what it is," he added, Nintendo's lawyers peering over his shoulder.

ORIGINAL STORY: Games released on Nintendo's 3DS eShop can weigh in with as much as 2GB of data, it has been revealed.

This means that 3DS eShop titles can fit in fifty times more game than WiiWare releases, which were limited to just 40MB.

Nintendo's file size specifications were outed by Super Meat Boy developer Tommy Refenes, an outspoken critic of the WiiWare's file size limit.

"[WiiWare's] 40MB is horrible, but [3DS's] 2GB is reasonable," Refenes told Nintendo Gamer magazine (via Nintendo Everything).

"Super Meat Boy would have been on WiiWare if we could have had just a few more megabytes of space - you can only compress stuff so much before you have to start cutting out huge parts of your game. Unfortunately, at that point, it just isn't worth the time."

By comparison, the standard size of a 3DS game cartridge is 2GB (although Metal Gear Solid 3D packs a 4GB punch). Technically this means that most 3DS games could be made available via digital download, should Nintendo allow it.
