Nier due out in spring in the US

"The next RPG from Square Enix."

Square Enix's North American arm yesterday said it had slated Nier for a spring release. It's not confirmed if this also applies to Europe; we've contacted Square Enix to find out.

The action game developed by Cavia (creator of, among other things, Bullet Witch, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, KORG DS-10 and Lovely Complex: Punch de Conte) is for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, although there will be a second, PS3-exclusive version called Nier Replicant for Japan only.

Square Enix also seems keen to talk up the RPG features of what we previously thought was a straight hackandslash in the Devil May Cry mould.

"The Next RPG from Square Enix," trumpets the press release, which you can read at Team Xbox. "RPG Gameplay Injected With Action-Packed Combat," it continues. "Battle ferocious and mysterious enemies by combining proven RPG-style gameplay, such as magic, character development and faithful allies, with action-focused explosive swordplay and combat."

We'll bring you more on when to expect Nier in Europe as soon as we can. In the meantime, check out the trailers and more at the gamepage below.
