New "very hard" levels are coming to Celeste in early 2019

"We never expected it to reach so many people."

New "very hard" levels are coming to platformer Celeste early next year.

In a couple of tweets thanking fans and expressing disbelief at having reached so many people, creator Matt Thorson confirmed the "farewell" levels would be coming in early 2019, as well as hinting that their next project would be announced "in the new year" too (thanks, PC Gamer).

"Celeste sold over 500,000 copies in 2018," Thorson tweeted. "Thank you everyone who played it. We never expected it to reach so many people."

"We're working on some farewell Celeste levels, which should be ready in early 2019. They're very hard. And we'll be announcing what's next for us in the new year as well. See you in 2019."

Furthermore, composer Lena Chappelle added that Celeste's success - the original soundtrack of which has been streamed over 4 million times on Spotify, as well as selling over 6,000 copies - has "legitimately enabled" them to launch their freelance career and "continue to write rad music for you all".

Celeste heads up Xbox's Games with Gold promotion in January. If you've yet to play it, in his review Christian Donlan said: "Celeste is brutal, but it's also sweet, and in its handling of the two elements it finds both a touching, timely narrative and an enviable sense of balance. What a game."
