LittleBigPlanet dev announces new PlayStation Vita game Tearaway

Media Molecule tears the wrapping paper off its beautiful new world.

LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule has announced Tearaway, a new papercraft-style adventure for PlayStation Vita.

The game offers a 3D universe made out of paper. You can use the touchscreen to manipulate cardboard springs, and hustle your hero over crumpled paper bag structures.

That hero is Iota, a diminutive messenger from the paper world. He has an envelope for a face and a Pikmin-style leaf for hair.

The game's standout feature is the ability to poke your fingers into the game using the rear touchpad. You'll see a virtual version of your fingertips tear through the paper level to defeat enemies.

You can also blow into the microphone, or shout, to influence the game world. This can add a gust of wind or a fearsome roar to ward off baddies.

Paper was a perfect medium for the PlayStation Vita due to its tactile nature, Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans said on-stage at Sony's Gamescom press conference today. No release date was mentioned.

The studio has now relinquished control of the LittleBigPlanet series' future: a PlayStation Vita version and spin-off LittleBigPlanet Karting.
