Just Dance 2 tops 5 million sales

Ubisoft: It's "revitalised" the music genre.

Ubisoft's Wii floor-filler Just Dance 2 has sold more than five million copies worldwide since launch, the publisher has announced.

The franchise has now spent an impressive 45 weeks in the UK top 10 since the first game shimmied onto shelves back in November 2009.

The sequel, which Eurogamer's Oli Welsh deemed worthy of 8/10 when it launched last October, was the sixth best selling game of 2010 in the UK. The original game fared even better, coming in at third and beating out all first party Nintendo efforts.

The series has now notched up total global sales of over 10 million, which Ubisoft claims makes it the third biggest game franchise of the year.

In the wake of sluggish sales of the latest Guitar Hero, DJ Hero and Rock Band titles, the publisher is duly taking credit for breathing new life into the stagnant music genre.

"The Just Dance franchise has revitalised the video game music category with consumers worldwide joining the dance movement," said Ubisoft marketing man Geoffroy Sardin.

"Players of all ages are enjoying the social and physical benefits of playing Just Dance 2 as it's truly a game that is accessible and enjoyable for everyone."

Nintendo of America big cheese Reggie Fils-Aime chipped in too, claiming the franchise's success is proof that there's plenty of room for third party titles on Nintendo's home console.

"The strong performance of Just Dance 2 is a perfect example of the potential that can be achieved by an independent publisher like Ubisoft in delivering irresistible content for the Wii system," he said.
