id creative director Matt Hooper joins Oculus Rift

Ex-Doom 4 developer in virtual reality.

id Software creative director Matt Hooper has joined Oculus Rift.

Hooper, who was working on Doom 4 while at id, is Oculus VR director of development, according to Gamefront, and will work at the company's Dallas, Texas office.

"He's a top talent who had been out of id for a few months and ended up being a great fit for the Oculus team," read a statement. "We're looking for more all-stars!"

Hooper was a 10-year id veteran and worked across a number of its brands, including Doom and Rage.

The news of his departure follows this week's shock revelation that id Software programmer legend and co-founder John Carmack had joined Oculus as chief technical officer, while retaining a role at the Zenimax-owned studio.

Hooper was the id developer who responded to last year's Doom 4 art leak, saying the images published on the internet were "nothing to do with what you're gonna see in Doom 4".

"When we officially show things, you'll see awesome," he added. "When we officially show things, fans will be happy."

Where Hooper's departure from id and Carmack's attention firmly with Oculus leaves Doom 4 is anyone's guess. In April 2013 id publisher Bethesda confirmed development of a "new version" of Doom 4, planned for next-gen consoles - but it sounds like a release is a long way off.

"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," Bethesda's marketing boss Pete Hines said.

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

All id staff are currently working on Doom 4.
