The Magic Chisel - The Mason's Channel

The first stop on your hunt for the Magic Chisel - one of two MacGuffin's you'll need to get to Jotunheim, the other being the Jotunheim travel rune - is a place called The Mason's Channel, which is in sight from where you are in the Lake of Nine.

Head down to your boat and paddle North-East, to the two big crossed oars held by a couple of giant statues.

Through the other side you'll notice a big, closed gate on your left, and up ahead a place to dock, but only a small area of land to run about on.

On dry land, you'll notice a weird, floating spectre hovvering above a corpse. This chap gives you the side quest favour, The Anatomy of Hope, if you talk to him, but worry about that later. Your task right now is to get that chisel, which means opening the gate.

Head to the big wheel nearby and turn it, as always, to open the gate - but as you do be prepared for a battle!

Several enemies - a lot of them Dark Elves, weirdly - will attack, along with an Ogre, which is defeated in the usual manner: beat it down and then hop on its back when prompted to smash away at the other enemies nearby, and eventually take it down.

After they're all cleared out, head back to the boat and paddle through the now-open gate.

The caves you travel through will begin to turn rather icy as you progress, and soon enough you're in a real winter wonderland as temperatures suddenly plummet.

At the other end, you soon come to a dock, and there are more enemies ahead.

The Northern Dock

Moor up and hop onto dry land, and you've reached The Northern Dock.

Directly in front of you are two new enemies: Wulvers, which are essentially werewolves with some pretty vicious attacks.

Investigate the dead Giant

Take them out - beware the red rings indicating unblockable attacks, and dodge accordingly, countering where you can and using Atreus to stun them when needed - and then head to that big glowing ring... that's on the finger of the huge, fallen Giant, Thamur.

There's another Hidden Chamber to the north, but worry about that later - your task here is getting past this big finger. First up, shoot it with a shock arrow - that red gem is another explosive red crystal!

This'll drop it to the ground, and now you need to turn it to the side to touch it to the ice, so it can be shattered. First, turn it to the right.

Shoot the ring with another Shock Arrow and the ice on the right will shatter, granting you access to a coffin chest just inside.

Then turn it all the way to the left and do the same, and now the path ahead is clear.

Head inside to find a cavern with a couple of Wulvers up ahead on the upper level, and another Hidden Chamber door at on the bottom. The Wulvers are actually frozen for now, so take them out with some range attacks before they reanimate, and then drop down to the bottom level.

Hang left, and there's a small marked ledge you can climb up to find a walkway up to the higher level. Follow it up and round until you find a gold chain - but don't climb it yet, continue just past it instead to another coffin chest, that contains some very handy armour.

Now, climb up that golden chain and exit into the next area, The Frozen Lake around Thamur's Corpse, and be ready for more puzzles and combat ahead.
