Gaming-focused Kickstarter alternative announced

Gambitious lets backers become shareholders.

A gaming-only alternative to zeitgeist-grabbing crowdfunding site Kickstarter is set to launch during June's E3 event.

As detailed by GamesIndustry International, Gambitious is a Dutch start-up that will allow anyone investing in a project to become a shareholder and earn dividends should the game prove a success.

That differs from Kickstarter's model, which only permits cash pledges in return for pre-designated rewards.

"The main difference between Gambitious and the currently popular Kickstarter is that the former does not rely on donations," said CEO Korstiaan Zandvliet.

"Instead, a developer decides what percentage of the required funding people can buy. Someone who invests money in a project, becomes a shareholder and is entitled to dividends."

Kickstarter has helped a number of niche projects get off the ground without the involvement of a publisher, including Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2 and Halo Reach design lead Christian Allen's Takedown tactical shooter.
