Games of 2014: The Wolf Among Us

Nobody's listening.

When I think about the events that came to dominate the news this past year, two words come to mind - desperation and confusion. This was the year that political tensions, brewing for decades, finally bubbled over. And yet, as I thumb through comprehensive explanations of all the little steps that led to the formation of ISIS, of Putin's renewed bullishness, of the galvanization of class roles throughout the first world, it's practically deterministic. "Of course," I say to myself. "What did we think would happen?"

The Wolf Among Us: Cry Wolf review

Looking back at the final episode and full season.

And so Bigby Wolf's first gaming adventure comes to a close. It's been an uneven journey, to say the least, with some episodes feeling particularly light while others have crammed plot twists and action scenes in so tightly you can barely breathe. The writing, as you'd expect in a Telltale game, has been sharp and memorable, but the gameplay has wobbled as the developer struggled to adapt this prequel to an existing story (the Fables graphic novel it's based on) into the same framework that served The Walking Dead's standalone side-story so well.

The Wolf Among Us, Episode 3: A Crooked Mile review

Note: As always with an episodic game, there are potential spoilers here that may impact your enjoyment of previous episodes if you haven't played them yet.

One of the pleasures - and pitfalls - of reviewing an episodic game is that the usual approach doesn't work. We can't judge the whole, so each piece must be considered on its own, the end of the journey which may or may not tie everything together still shrouded in mystery. In a way, it's exactly like reviewing a TV show - you're commenting on the journey as it goes, rather than after the fact.

So at the halfway mark of Telltale's fairytale noir The Wolf Among Us, if this were a TV show, would I still be tuning in? Almost certainly: it's a good story, well told, with interesting characters. But I'd also be starting to worry that it's not going to stick the landing when it comes to the final episode.

The Wolf Among Us, Episode 2: Smoke and Mirrors review

NOTE: While this review will not divulge any specific plot details, in discussing the events of Episode 2 there is inevitably a chance that it will impact your experience of Episode 1 if you have yet to play it. Consider this your spoiler warning.

Rather later than expected, the second episode of Telltale's adaptation of the Vertigo comic book Fables is finally here. Leaving players on a cliffhanger is one thing - making them wait the best part of four months before continuing the tale is quite another.

That delay will become meaningless soon enough, of course, and for anyone who binges on the whole season once it's complete it won't even register, but right now it can't help but hurt a story that desperately needs to establish momentum. It's especially damaging for a detective mystery, where there are multiple twists and turns to remember between episodes. After a third of a year, you'd be forgiven for replaying Episode 1 again to get back up to speed.

Developers' Most Anticipated Games of 2014

Titanfall! Destiny! The Witcher 3! The Last Guardian (hopefully)!

2014 is upon us, and it promises riches and glory unlike any year before it. With their launches under their belts, the next generation of consoles will, hopefully, show us what they're made of. Virtual reality headsets may make their mark on the mainstream. And with a raft of crowdfunded games due out over the next 12 months, 2014 should tell us whether all that money we pumped into promising projects on Kickstarter was worth it.

The Wolf Among Us launches on iOS today

Will it huff, puff and blow you away?

The Wolf Among Us, Telltale's prequel to Bill Willingham's Fables series of comics, is coming to iOS later today.

Or at least its debut episode, Faith, is. Set in the world of 1980s New York filled with fairy tale characters, the iOS version of The Wolf Among Us is set to cost $4.99 (about 3), much as it was when the pilot launched on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC last month. Fans can also purchase a season pass of the remaining four episodes for $14.99 (about 9).

Our Dan Whitehead was cautiously optimistic about The Wolf Among Us after playing its first episode. "Story-wise, I'm hooked," he wrote in his review of Faith. "It would be good to see subsequent chapters raising the bar with regards to gameplay," he noted, before adding that, "the characters are fascinating, the plot heavy with potential, and my faith in Telltale's skill is high."
