FeatureDanny Bilson: inside the rise and fall of THQ

The outspoken former chief of Saints Row, Homefront and Darksiders finally breaks his silence.

The week before Danny Bilson left THQ in May 2012, he still had hope. He had a plan: Darksiders 2 from Vigil. Metro: Last Light from 4AGames. Company of Heroes 2 from Relic Entertainment. Enter the Dominatrix, the standalone expansion for Saints Row the Third, from Volition. South Park: The Stick of Truth, in production at Obsidian Entertainment. Homefront 2 at Crytek UK. And then there was the unannounced stuff: the next-gen game from Turtle Rock we now know is called Evolve. Patrice Désilets' 1666 at THQ Montreal. The portfolio is long and impressive.

UPDATE: Warhammer 40,000 licence remains with THQ, publisher confirms.

UPDATE: THQ has confirmed Eurogamer's previous suspicions - that the publisher still holds the rights to Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K licence.

Rights to fantasy-based Warhammer games used to belong to EA, publisher of Warhammer Online. It is the future of these rights that Creative Assembly holds.

ORIGINAL STORY: Total War developer The Creative Assembly has signed a deal to make multiple games in the Warhammer universe, publisher Sega has announced.

EU PlayStation Store update 12th October

Castlevania! DA2! Space Marine for £50!

This week's EU PlayStation Store update is a threadbare affair, headlined by the delayed 2D side-scroller Castlevania: Harmony of Despair.

Castlevania: HOD was first released last August as part of the Xbox 360's annual Summer of Arcade season, when it scored a frightful 4/10 from Eurogamer's John Teti.

There's still no sign of Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection however. Sony previously blamed the six week delay on a "technical issue" with the game.

The free add-on will hit all three platforms - PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 - at once. Note that the PlayStation Store updates a day later in Europe each week, on Wednesdays.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Say what you like about Dawn of War and Company of Heroes - and if you're anything like us then what you will say is "they're awesome", in any case - but you can't deny that Relic knows and loves Warhammer 40,000.

Space Marine, a third-person hack-and-slash/shooter hybrid, is the latest example of that wonderful, contagious affection. Spend a few minutes with the multiplayer customisation suite - unlocked when you hit level 4 online - and you will probably find yourself rapt.

There are hundreds of possible combinations of pre-authored armour sets depending on the Space Marine chapter you favour, or you can come up with your own by choosing from dozens of colour and pattern variations. You can also customise your loadout with familiar weapons like the chainsword, melta gun and several different bolters, and choose from a range of perks, like Blast Off, where your jump pack engine exhaust causes damage on lift-off.

Digital FoundryWarhammer 40,000: Space Marine demo showdown

Digital Foundry analysis of the PS3/360 demos.

THQ's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine may well have picked up some bizarre, unflattering press recently for its superficial similarities to Gears of War, but our experience of the recently released playable demo is almost entirely positive with the game offering up an intriguing spin on the established third person shooter formula.

The Emperor's new groove.

How much do you know about marine biology? Now, I'm not talking about that creepy subset of real-world science where you learn how clams can get depressed or how sea urchins mate (the answer is "carefully"). I'm talking about Space Marine biology. Because whether or not you're excited about Relic's upcoming 3rd person action game could probably come down to how clued up you are.

Plus, Steam support confirmed.

Developer Relic has gone public with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine's PC system requirements.

As seen on the game's official site, it's a relatively manageable set of demands, with THQ seemingly favouring Steam over Games For Windows Live.

The third person shooter is due out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 from 9th September. Have a read of our recent Space Marine preview for more on what to expect.

More Warhammer 40k coming from THQ

Games Workshop deal extension signed.

THQ has signed a new "multi-year" extension on its exclusive Warhammer 40,000 licensing agreement with brand owner Games Workshop.

Space Marine's greatest potential banana skin was always going to be the timing of its release. In a year that will see no shortage of epic, cinematic action shooters, it faces a tough gig to stand out from the crowd while conforming to expectations.

FeatureTHQ on everything

Dawn of War III, UFC 3, Guillermo del Toro and more.

Danny Bilson doesn't do interviews like other high ranking videogame executives. The THQ core games boss is happy to talk frankly about not only announced games, but unannounced games. This, we're not used to.

The life of a Space Marine is not an easy one. Setting aside blood-soaked galaxy-spanning conflict and the fact that simply writing down the date in the year 40,000 is a bit of a faff, just look at that one-ton outfit they're clad in.

W40K Space Marine heading to PC

In addition to consoles next year.

THQ has announced that its upcoming third-person shooter based on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Space Marine, will be released on PC in addition to PS3 and Xbox 360.

Saints Row 3 on track for FY2012

As are Space Marine, Darksiders 2.

THQ big cheese Brian Farrell has revealed that Saints Row 3, Darksiders 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will all be released in fiscal 2012.

Adeptus Astartes point.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is nothing but war. But in the nicely decorated offices of Relic in downtown Vancouver, there is nothing but love. Love for Warhammer. Plastic and lead space marine miniatures are carefully arranged on almost every desk, monitor and cubical divider; there are entire rooms set aside for lunchtime games of 40k; and the lobby's home not only to a giant Blood Raven space marine whose sawblade we all diligently pose our necks against for photos, but a nine-foot statue tribute to the god-emperor of mankind.

THQ doing Warhammer 40K shooter?

Gory game footage drives speculation.

The watchful internet has spotted what appears to be in-game footage of a new third-person shooter set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, to which THQ holds the exclusive licence.
