Glorious co-op puzzle platforming series Trine has sold upwards of 7 million copies between its two games covering eight platforms, developer Frozenbyte has announced.
Gorgeous platforming adventure Trine 2: Complete Story is now set to be a PS4 launch title in both North America and Europe. Thus it'll be out tomorrow in North America and on 29th November here.
Priced at €16.99 / $19.99, this latest rendition of Trine 2 boasts 1080p visuals, runs at 60 fps, and most excitingly, supports stereoscopic 3D, a first for the platform. This is especially noteworthy as the PS4 doesn't even support 3D movies yet.
Trine 2: Complete Story also supports the DualShock 4's touchpad and contains the Goblin Menace expansion pack and a secret unlockable level called the Dwarven Caverns.
The better-than-director's cut version of side-scrolling puzzle adventure Trine 2 will launch for PlayStation 4, developer Frozenbyte has announced.
Trine 2: Complete Story will be available to download from the PlayStation Store at launch, Frozenbyte hopes, or shortly thereafter. It will offer a number of graphical upgrades from previous versions, plus the extra levels and DLC released to date.
1080p HD and 60fps visuals will be accompanied by a stereoscopic 3D mode to show off the game's beautiful backdrops.
Meet the multi-platform game that looks better on Nintendo's new console.
Multi-platform projects on Wii U have underwhelmed somewhat. Performance is a real issue on some titles (notably Batman: Arkham City and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2), making them less playable than they were before on other systems, even if the core visuals are mostly a match. We concluded that developers may well need to adjust to the Wii U's architectural quirks in order to take proper advantage of the platform, but remain concerned about the lack of CPU power.
While Trine 2 may not be a major AAA release worthy of blockbuster coverage, it is a quaint puzzle platformer which is as technically brilliant as it is absorbing to play. More importantly though, special attention has been paid to the Wii U version of the game: in an interview with NintendoLife, sales and marketing manager Mikael Haveri stated that the Wii U version would not only feature additional graphical upgrades over other console releases, but that neither the 360 or the PS3 were capable of running Trine 2 with the same level of visual polish as the PC and Wii U editions. We also understand that the game's architectural underpinnings favour stronger graphics hardware and that the code is relatively light in terms of its CPU requirement - a good match for Wii U hardware, in other words.
We were intrigued by the prospect of a Wii U launch title taking advantage of the hardware to potentially deliver the definitive console edition and so broke out the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Wii U versions for Digital Foundry's first full "produced from scratch" quad-format Face-Off. Let's begin by taking a look at the 360 and Wii U games in our opening head-to-head video, along with an extensive all-formats comparison gallery.
Sony has confirmed that European PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to play enchanting downloadable adventure Journey a week before everyone else - just like their US gaming cousins.
They'll also get a free Plus-exclusive Dynamic Theme.
Trine 2 finally launches on the European PS Store this week months after it went live on the US PS Store. To apologise, Sony and publisher Atlus have arranged a 30 per cent discount for the first two weeks after release.
Frozenbyte "very disappointed" with failed simultaneous launch.
The PlayStation Network version of Trine 2 is currently going through the Sony Computer Entertainment Europe QA process, developer Frozenbyte has confirmed to Eurogamer.
Trine was a great co-op adventure that too many people worked their way through alone. Multiplayer was only available locally, and Frozenbyte's rather earnest class-based platformer could initially seem a little too complicated to appeal to the drop-in, drop-out couch crowd.
Trine 2 doesn't change very much about the basics of the design, but it does take its new campaign online for up to three players. It's easy to jump into, extremely stable (on the PC/Mac version anyway, which is all I've tested) and it's a crucial addition to the game. Suddenly you can blast through this chaotic fantasy universe with friends and strangers alike: improvising, collaborating and fighting over who gets to be the wizard.
Elsewhere, it's pretty much the game it once was, with Frozenbyte's vivid 3D art used to craft a new selection of intricate side-scrolling 2D levels laden with puzzles and combat. The first game's cast has returned, meaning you play while cycling between a brawling knight, a nimble grapple-hook-wielding thief and a wizard who can levitate objects and conjure a series of blocks and planks. They've each got a range of simple new powers to choose between as you level up, too, with skill points adding fire or ice to the thief's arrows, say, or allowing the wizard to chuck enemies around.

Fairy tale puzzle-platformer Trine 2 then rounds out the year's XBLA releases on 21st December.
A set of release dates have been announced for stylish puzzle platformer Trine 2.
Developer Frozenbyte states that the game debuts on Steam for PC and Mac on 7th December. North American PSN users get it next on 20th December, followed by a worldwide Xbox Live Arcade release on 21st December.
A European PSN date is yet to be announced but the studio hopes "it won't be far behind if delayed at all."
UPDATE: Frozenbyte has told Eurogamer Atlus is the worldwide publisher of the console versions of Trine 2. "We are aiming for a worldwide simultaneous launch on all platforms," a spokesperson said. "Focus is the European PC retail publisher and some online channels - we will self-publish on Steam and a few other worldwide channels."
Finnish developer Frozenbyte has announced that the sequel to its platform puzzle game Trine is due out next year.
Unlike the original, Trine 2 will be released for PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Frozenbyte has said to expect it in spring.
The original game saw players take control of three characters - a thief, a knight and a wizard - each with their own special abilities that came in handy solving puzzles.
