The Wii U is getting a GameCube controller adapter, Nintendo has announced.

The upcoming peripheral was revealed in a promotional video for E3's Super Smash Bros. Invitational, then later confirmed on Twitter where Nintendo noted that the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will support this control scheme.

This device plugs into the Wii U and allows up to four GameCube controllers to connect to it. Could this mean that Nintendo will start manufacturing GameCube controller's again?

Nintendo managed to sell a whopping 720,000 Wii consoles in the US last month.

Sales were boosted by the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 2.7 million copies were sold in March, three times as many as the game's nearest competitor.

According to NPD data Nintendo's name was on 58 per cent of all hardware sold across the US, with the DS shifting 698,000 units.

Nintendo has shown off a new Super Smash Bros. Brawl trailer at its Nintendo World event in Japan today, "comprised almost entirely of gameplay" according to reports.

Sakurai spills the beans.

Those excited by the prospect of forthcoming Wii title Super Smash Bros. may already know that the game's creator, Masahiro Sakurai, likes to keep everyone informed about how it's coming along via his blog.

Problem is, it's all in Japanese - but the good news is that a fan has been hard at work translating the info into English, as reported by 1up.

Hence we now know that a Fire Emblem character could make an appearance in the game, along with Mario, Link and Solid Snake. As previously announced, you'll be able to play the game online, but it'll all be pretty simple stuff - there won't be any leaderboards, for example.
