Saints Row: The Third Review

Danny Bilson: inside the rise and fall of THQ

The outspoken former chief of Saints Row, Homefront and Darksiders finally breaks his silence.

The week before Danny Bilson left THQ in May 2012, he still had hope. He had a plan: Darksiders 2 from Vigil. Metro: Last Light from 4AGames. Company of Heroes 2 from Relic Entertainment. Enter the Dominatrix, the standalone expansion for Saints Row the Third, from Volition. South Park: The Stick of Truth, in production at Obsidian Entertainment. Homefront 2 at Crytek UK. And then there was the unannounced stuff: the next-gen game from Turtle Rock we now know is called Evolve. Patrice Désilets' 1666 at THQ Montreal. The portfolio is long and impressive.

THQ is no more. This is where its assets went

UPDATE: Platinum Games is interested in Darksiders.

Update #4: Does IP changing hands equal upheaval? Does upheaval equal game delay? Obsidian's South Park: Stick of Truth was due in March. Is it still? "It's too soon to say," Ubisoft told me this afternoon. "We'll have more details to share about plans for specific games soon."

Pay what you want for Metro 2033, Darksiders, Red Faction: Armageddon and Company of Heroes

THQ Humble Bundle also throws in Saints Row: The Third if you pay over the average.

We've become accustomed to pay-what-you-want models for indie games, but it's rare to see titles that were full priced retail offerings as recently as a year ago make the cut. That's changed with the THQ Humble Bundle that allows players to name their price for a collection that includes: Metro 2033, Darksiders, Red Faction: Armageddon, Company of Heroes and its two expansions, Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor.

Saints Row: The Third - The Full Package release date announced

Publisher THQ has announced a DLC-packed version of Saints Row: The Third. Subtitled The Full Package, the innuendo-fuelled adventure is due to arrive in the UK on 9th November.

Those who pick up the bumper version will get all of the game's three major DLC mission packs as standard: Genkibowl VII, Gangstas In Space, and The Trouble With Clones.

Also included is every item of "bonus DLC" ever made for the game - there's more than 30. Do you have the the Shark Attack pack, the Witches & Wieners pack, the Special Operations pack, or the Genki Girl Vehicle pack?

Saints Row: The Third's standalone expansion Enter the Dominatrix has been merged into the next main Saints Row game, publisher THQ has confirmed.

This is due to launch in "calender 2013", THQ president Jason Rubin confirmed.

"When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise," Rubin said.

When I sat down to chat with Danny Bilson during THQ's pre-E3 showcase event in North London earlier this month, I had no idea that, just over a week later, he would no longer be with the publisher. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, but I'm convinced there was something about the way he introduced presentations on Company of Heroes 2, Metro: Last Light and Darksiders 2 to European press that morning that was, for want of a better term, off.

Saints Row: The Third gets standalone expansion

Enter the Dominatrix adds super powers, alien invaders.

OTT open world actioner Saints Row: The Third gets a standalone expansion this Autumn on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, publisher THQ has announced.

Titled Enter the Dominatrix, it picks up directly after the end of the original release. The leader of the Third Street Saints has been abducted by an extraterrestrial warlord called Zinyak - who has eyes on invading earth - and locked in an elaborate virtual reality simulation.

"This simulation program looks and feels like Steelport, but it is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. Here, you are a slave. Welcome... to the Dominatrix," explained the announcement blurb.

Anyone purchasing the PlayStation 3 version of Saints Row: The Third in the US, Canada or Mexico can claim a free download of Saints Row 2, THQ has announced.

As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, just enter the Online Pass code included with the game before 13th February 2012 and you'll receive a complimentary download of its 2008 predecessor.

The post doesn't explicitly spell it out, but it seems likely the deal is an attempt to make up for the no-show of planned PS3-exclusive content in the finished game, as reported earlier this week.

Saints Row: The Third Review

Saints Row: The Third Review

The lulz before the storm.

Grand Theft Auto 4 was the best thing that ever happened to Saints Row. When it originally launched, THQ's open-world rival was little more than a cheeky copycat, offering the same transgressive thrills in a cruder, cheaper form; the Zit to GTA's more successful Viz.

Then GTA4 came along, and with it a sharp detour from the sort of knockabout nihilism that had typified the series. In the midst of Niko Bellic's downbeat immigrant saga, going on a rocket launcher rampage seemed a little weird, and Saints Row 2 was quick to position itself as the gleefully silly sandbox game that still let you smash your toys until something broke. If GTA was aiming for high drama and critical acclaim, Saints Row was happy to fly the flag for those playing "for the lulz".

And so comes Saints Row: The Third, a game that has been marketed almost exclusively on the basis of all the wacky stuff it will let you do, silly costumes, sex toy weaponry, ragdoll mayhem and all.

The exclusive mode was announced at E3 2011 in June, and was said to use Saints Row's "signature weapon", presumably the dildo bat censored for the Japanese version.
