Nintendo and Microsoft confirm E3 attendance in wake of PlayStation no-show

Microsoft and Nintendo will both be at next year's E3, and they want you to know about it.

Both companies have moved to express their support of the games industry's annual extravaganza following Sony's unprecedented announcement last night PlayStation would skip the show for the first time in E3's 24-year history.

Writing on Twitter as word of PlayStation's decision reverberated around the internet, Xbox chief Phil Spencer said Microsoft would have "a lot to share" at the event next year:

Over the past few days, several PlayStation users have been reporting a malicious console-crashing attack sent via console message. Players claimed a specific character combination had "bricked" their consoles, forced them to factory reset their PlayStations, and that "even deleting the message from the mobile app" didn't protect them. The only known way for players to protect themselves was by setting their messages to private.

PlayStation 4 firmware update 5.0 released

PlayStation 4 firmware update 5.0 released

No more pop-ups during films!

Isn't 'firmware' a boring word? It sounds like a pair of body-control underpants. Anyway, PlayStation 4 firmware 5.0 has been released. It is 374.7MB.

The biggest additions come from an eSports push, and among them the ability to form teams for games while outside of the game, it sounds like. Problem is, the only games supporting the feature are Uncharted 4 and Mantis Burn Racing - for now.

Teams can register for upcoming events, can have customised names, logos and profiles, and can display results on their own team page. Teams can have up to 100 people and you can, apparently, be part of 60 teams at once, which sounds confusing. Team-chat is built in.

PS4 top-selling US console in June despite Kinect-less Xbox One launch

PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console in the US in June, Sony has announced, a title that the console has now held for six months running.

Microsoft's decision to begin selling the Xbox One without Kinect (and at a cheaper price) helped double the console's sales month-on-month. But it is telling that, even then, the console still could not beat Sony's machine.

Nintendo saw a 233 per cent increase in Wii U sales over June 2013, largely thanks to the May launch of Mario Kart 8.

Sony has announced Project Morpheus, its virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4. It's a prototype for now, but Sony intends to develop it further for a commercial launch.

Morpheus is a visor style head-mounted display that works with the PlayStation Camera to deliver a virtual reality experience. Inertial sensors are built into the head mount unit and the Camera, which the headset requires to work, tracks head orientation and movement so as the player's head rotates the image of the virtual world rotates in real-time.

It also works with the PS Move motion controller. Morpheus reproduces the player's hands and sword, for example, within the game so the player feels like they are physically fighting enemies.

PS4 sales do the business for Sony

PS4 sales do the business for Sony

Sells Vaio, splits out TV business, axes 5000 staff.

Impressive sales of the PlayStation 4 helped Sony post increased profit in its recent financial quarter.

In its financial reports Sony lumps sales of all home PlayStation consoles together, so we don't have an updated figure for the PS4 (it was 4.2m as of 28th December 2013). However, we do know that PS4 and PS3 sales combined were for the quarter ending 31st December 2013 7.8m. Combined Vita and PSP sales for the quarter were 2m.

Sony's Game division, which looks after PlayStation, saw an impressive 64.6 per cent rise in sales year-on-year to $4.2bn. Why? Because of the launch of the PlayStation in Europe, North America and Latin America in November as well as the favourable impact of foreign exchange rates.

China lifts ban on foreign console sales

China lifts ban on foreign console sales

Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony rub hands in glee.

China has temporarily lifted its ban on the sale of foreign video game consoles, opening the door for the likes of Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony to enter the gargantuan market.

The ban, which had been in place for 14 years, prevented the sale of the PlayStation, Wii and Xbox consoles in the country.

Reuters reported on a statement from China's State Council that suspended the ban, allowing "foreign-invested enterprises" to make consoles within Shanghai's free trade zone and sell them within China - as long as they are approved by the government.

PS4 looks set to break records at launch

PS4 looks set to break records at launch

But longer term, Sony faces a tough challenge.

In the moments before our interview begins proper, Andrew House tells me 2013 has been his most exciting year since joining Sony. If he's being sincere - and, given what happened at E3 this year, he may well be - 2013 should be honoured. House, the communications expert from Wales who rose through the ranks to become boss of all of Sony Computer Entertainment - was at Sony Corp when PlayStation was a mere skunkworks project 23 years ago.

He's seen it all, then, from the pioneering PSone and WipEout to the glory days of PS2 and Gran Turismo, from the tough early days of the hyper-expensive, difficult-to-develop-for PS3 to the euphoria of PS4's unveiling.

Last night, with over 300 fans waiting patiently outside the Covent Garden shop come stage come gaming arcade Sony had constructed to mark the launch of the PS4, PlayStation was buzzing. People walk briskly with clipboards and mics at the ready, setting things up, making preparations, fixing the stage for rapper Tinie Tempah's 11pm show, testing smoke machines...

Sony hopes to lower the PlayStation 4 failure rate further for the console's UK launch.

PS4 launched two weeks ago in North America, and soon after reports came in of a "blinking blue light" issue that rendered the console unusable.

Sony said the number of PS4 units "dead on arrival" was one per cent the one million consoles that were sold within 24 hours of the North American launch. That amounted to around 10,000 units.

EGXSony on PS4: "the format war is a marathon, not a sprint"

Price, cameras and Steam Box with PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara.

Sony's PlayStation executives hope with PS4 this time things will be different. This time, Sony launches alongside Microsoft, not 16 months afterwards like with PS3. This time, Sony is cheaper than Xbox, not hundreds of pounds more. And this time, Sony is taking a gamer-first approach - and that, it seems, is translating into real world business.

Sony Japan executive Masayasu Ito made the comment to Eurogamer today in an interview at the company's Tokyo headquarters.

Eurogamer has heard from well-placed sources that Sony expects to make an approximate $60 loss per $399 unit sold. When presented with the figure, Ito denied it - but only because the company expects a typical user to buy a console with these other items.
