Screenshots of a new HD Mario Kart game have surfaced - not from Nintendo, but from Namco Bandai, developer of the series' arcade outings.

Nintendo deploys glitch-fixing Mario Kart 7 patch

Nintendo has deployed its promised patch for Mario Kart 7. It eliminates the ability to skip large sections of the race track on specific courses.

Fair online racing was previously made impossible by cheaters deliberately exploiting the game's glitches and repeatedly choosing broken levels to play on.

The patch mends the notorious Wuhu Mountain Loop glitch and provides similar fixes for the Wuhu Island Loop and GBA Bowser Castle 1 courses.

Nintendo 3DS sales top 17.13 million

Japanese firm posts first ever annual loss.

17.13 million 3DS consoles have now been sold worldwide, Nintendo has announced. The figure covers all sales up to the end of March 2012.

That means a healthy two million more 3DS units have been sold in the last three months. A previous tally of 15.03 million was jotted down at the end of last year.

Even the company's aging Wii coughed out another million units. It has now sold 95.85 million, up from 94.97 million on New Year's Eve 2011.

The 3DS has sold twice as many units as the DS did in its first year on sale, Nintendo has announced.

The 3DS sold 4.5 million units in its first year in the US. It went on sale there on 27th March 2011.

A year after the DS launched in the US, on 21st November 2004, it had sold 2.3 million units.

The Nintendo 3DS has set another sales record in Japan - further evidence, if it was needed, that it has recovered from its launch troubles.

Over the weekend it crossed the five million sales mark in 52 weeks - a record for Japanese hardware sales.

The previous record holder was the Nintendo DS, which shifted five million in 56 weeks. In third place is the Game Boy Advance, which hit the milestone on week 58.

Nintendo slashes sales forecasts, expects bigger losses than feared

Nintendo has predicted it will finish the financial year with a greater loss than expected after making far less money than hoped.

When the current financial year ends on 31st March 2012, Nintendo expects it will have made a total loss of 65 billion yen (£534.87 million), significantly more than the 20 billion yen originally forecast.

The company has announced an overall loss of 48.3 billion yen (£397.5 million) for the current financial year up until the end of December 2011.

3DS outsells all other hardware again.

PlayStation Vita sold another 15,219 units in Japan last week, but that figure marks the handheld's lowest ever weekly total.

Sales fell from 22,538 the week before, according to Japanese chart company Media Create (via NeoGAF, although hardware numbers were largely down across the chart.

3DS sales shrank to 80,960, down almost 20,000 but still enough to outsell the rest of the hardware chart combined.

Update: Tesco has responded to Eurogamer by confirming its pricing for Mario Kart 7 as £29.90 until Sunday - making it, for now at least, the cheapest place to buy the game in UK shops. From Monday, it will be £32.70.

3DS to outperform DS first year sales in US

The 3DS is on track to outperform the DS for first year sales in the US, Nintendo has said.

The 3DS sold 1.65 million units in the US in the eight months following launch. The DS sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months on sale, from November 2004 to October 2005. Half of those sales were made during the Christmas period.

In a note released today Nintendo highlighted the fact that the 3DS' first Christmas is around the corner, as are the launches of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

Nintendo's planned November 3DS firmware update will allow gamers to record up to 10 minutes of 3D video footage.

Videos can then be uploaded to YouTube, Japanese newspaper Nikkei reports (via Andrisang), although the paper was unclear on whether this was possible directly or merely through SD card transfer.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is expected to fully detail the update in a pre-recorded webcast to be broadcast later today. The talk will also see Iwata reveal the upcoming Mario Kart 7's online functions.

US Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 3 sales figures have leapt following their recent price drops, retailer GameStop today revealed.

"We have seen a significant acceleration in the sale of PlayStation 3 and the 3DS," GameStop president Tony Bartel told sister site GamesIndustry.biz.

3DS sales figures have shot through the roof in Japan after Nintendo's worldwide price cut took effect last week.

3DS sold 214,821 units between 8th and 14th August, according to chart company Enterbrain (via Famitsu). That's the highest weekly amount since the 3DS launched in February.

Two weeks earlier, 3DS sales were 16,415 units a week. (News of the price cut impacted sales the week after.)

From 11th August the handheld will be sold for 15,000 yen (£118) in Japan, down from its current 25,000 yen (£196) price tag.

Nintendo will price-cut the 3DS in overseas markets, including Europe, by September, "although the ranges and the markdown will be different from that of Japan".

The 3DS's Mario Kart will introduce hang gliders, underwater sections and vehicle customisation, and it's releasing towards the end of this year.

A trailer at Nintendo's E3 conference gave a more detailed look at the game, with several of the tracks seemingly prettied-up versions of those on Mario Kart DS.

Hang glider sections were also spotted with the karts sprouting wings as they took to the skies. The racing also went underwater at various times, with propellers appearing on the karts.

Mario Kart 3DS goes on sale before the end of the year, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed.

Nintendo's creative mastermind made the announcement at a French press event late last week, as reported by VG247.

Miyamoto didn't offer any more insight into what new features Nintendo is adding to the long-running racing franchise but did offer a few updates on a number of other 3DS titles.
