Someone hacked GTA Online to tease a fake GTA6 release date

Someone hacked GTA Online to tease a fake GTA6 release date

Rockstar confirms it is a “hoax”.

GTA is well known for its jokes and spoofs, but this week it would appear someone has beaten Rockstar at its own game by falsely advertising the next installment in the GTA series.

Over the past few days, GTA Online players have seen messages supposedly advertising GTA6 appear on the side of their screens. On the surface, the announcements appeared to be fairly legitimate: they used a font similar to the official Rockstar branding, and even included a link to Rockstar's website.

Unsurprisingly, this was enough to hoodwink many players, who were ecstatic at the news of a new GTA game and rushed to Twitter to express their excitement.

Los Santos is having a Black Friday sale in Grand Theft Auto Online

Big savings on "essentials" like hangars and underground bunkers.

Rockstar is bringing Black Friday straight to the streets of Grand Theft Auto Online, in what may well be the first example of a fictional video game city having its very own Black Friday celebrations. I probably wouldn't be willing to put money on that fact though.

Rockstar did not think GTA5 single-player expansions "were either possible or necessary"

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise to hear confirmation Grand Theft Auto 5, a game released in 2013, will not get a single-player expansion, however disappointing that may be.

Now, though, and from what I can tell is for the first time, Rockstar has explained why GTA 5 ended up without a big story add-on.

In a Q&A with Game Informer, Rockstar director of design Imran Sarwar said the company didn't think single-player expansions for GTA5 "were either possible or necessary".

On my honeymoon a few years back, my wife and I went to the coroner's office. More specifically, we went to the LA County Coroner's Office, in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. I had heard there was a gift shop, and my aunt and uncle, who live in LA and are always up for pretty much anything, said that it was a laugh riot, and so we drove out there from their place in Bunker Hill.

Ambitious GTA5 mod launches players into space

Ambitious GTA5 mod launches players into space

I would like to die on Mars. Just not on impact.

I'm sure, like me, while causing mayhem and seducing ladies of the night in GTA5 you've thought, "you know what would make this better? Being in space." Well wish no more, because a mod is coming which promises to move Rockstar's open world beyond its earthly dimensions.

Grand Theft Space is a creation by modder sollaholla and his team and aims to let players land on and explore new planets outside of the solar system as well as fight aliens.

The synopsis is as follows:

GTA 5 tops UK physical game sales chart for first half of 2017

GTA 5 tops UK physical game sales chart for first half of 2017

The top six best-selling games revealed - sales figures and all.

UK video game sales tracker Chart-Track does not publicly reveal sales figures - it leaves that to video game publishers. But the Entertainment Retailers Association does, and in its latest report for the first half of 2017, it revealed the top six best-selling physical games in the UK so far.

The behemoth that is Grand Theft Auto 5 is the UK's best-selling video game so far this year, with 334,280 physical copies sold. That's a pretty incredible return for a game that first came out four years ago. Who in the UK is still to buy the thing?

GTA 5 is closely followed by Ghost Recon: Wildlands, with 311,792 copies sold. It's fair to say Ubisoft's open-world chaos 'em-up is a success.

The Grand Theft Auto series has become notorious for its secrets, consisting of eerie Easter Eggs and cut content only available to those who tinker with its code. From GTA: San Andreas' infamous Hot Coffee sex mini-game to GTA 5's bizarre showdown between Bigfoot and Teen Wolf's beast, there's some pretty peculiar things going on in GTA's most clandestine corners.

Rockstar relaxes GTA single-player mod stance

"[We] believe in reasonable fan creativity."

Rockstar has seemingly relaxed its stance on single-player Grand Theft Auto mods, after the uproar caused by last week's cease and desist letter sent to popular mod OpenIV.

Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two Interactive has been widely criticised by fans recently over its legal threats shutting down popular modding software OpenIV. However, it also recently shut down some less benevolent GTA5 mods that enabled cheating in GTA Online. Weirder, the game publisher is making those responsible for these game-ruining experiences to donate their proceeds to charity.

GTA5's recent Steam reviews are "overwhelmingly negative" amidst mod controversy

GTA5's recent Steam reviews are "overwhelmingly negative" amidst mod controversy

The last 41,343 user reviews are largely unhappy with Take-Two.

Grand Theft Auto 5 publisher Take-Two Interactive has found itself in the crossfire after sending a cease and desist letter to the lead developer of popular modding software OpenIV. In fact, people are so unhappy with the company that GTA5, a game that's typically been very widely acclaimed, now has a recent Steam user rating that averages as "overwhelmingly negative".

To arrive at this score, Steam averaged the user rating across the last 41,343 reviews, so this anger towards Take-Two is more widespread than a vocal minority of frustrated modders.

Looking at the game's overall user rating, across a staggering 231,073 reviews, it's come out as "mixed".

Modder adds Rick and Morty's Rick to GTA5

And that's the waaaaay the news goes!

Next week Oculus Rift and HTC Vive owners will get a chance to play Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-Ality, but those without VR headsets may find themselves going through Rick withdrawals. Thankfully, Grand Theft Auto 5 modder Jedidiah515 has a solution and has added the popular Adult Swim character to Rockstar's open-world crime game.

More than three years after launch, GTA5 is back top of the charts

Grand Theft Auto 5 is back at the top of the UK charts, more than three years after its original launch.

Rockstar's open-world success has been hovering around the top spot again since Christmas, although it has rarely dropped outside the top 10 since it first arrived on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2013.

This week marks the 12th week GTA5 has sold more than any other game in the UK. For a game now several years old - even its PS4 and Xbox One re-release - it's a noteworthy feat.

Grand Theft Auto Online's latest update adds Splatoon-like territory control mode

Grand Theft Auto Online just added its latest free expansion, Import/Export.

This update adds the all new Turf Wars mode, which allows two to four teams to compete for control over tiles that you claim by driving over them. It sounds a bit like Splatoon, only with cars instead of transforming squid children. They both have shooting though as Turf Wars' arena is littered with rockets.

Elsewhere, Import/Export is all about stealing cars, as the series' name implies. You'll be able to earn an Executive Garage that can hold up to 60 vehicles, along with Vehicle Warehouses that will house special military grade vessels - some of which operate as boats or glide through the air.

New GTA 5 PC patch fixes frame-rate issue

Updates may affect mods, Rockstar reminds players.

Rockstar has released a new patch for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 5 that fixes a frame-rate issue caused by a previous update tied to GTA Online.

The developer took the opportunity to remind players about the situation with GTA 5 and mods. Reports from some players linked a decreased performance when using Story Mode mods to title update 1.28, sparking speculation Rockstar was clamping down.

YouTuber recreates The Phantom Pain's nine minute trailer in GTA5

Japanese YouTuber EV niconico has used Grand Theft Auto 5 to remake Hideo Kojima's stunning nine minute red band E3 trailer for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.

The results are simultaneously epic and hilarious. Some parts match up with the original trailer quite well - like the torture scene - while others take certain creative liberties with the content. There's no way to produce medics removing a body bomb, for example, so instead an alien autopsy easter egg is used. It's goofy as all hell, but still syncs with the music surprisingly well.

It's a shame that the English translation isn't better with the word "stelth" rearing its ugly head on more than one occasion, but all is forgiven for the amazing caption card that reads "Kojima is god!" Now if only the actual Phantom Pain trailer boasted the same claim.

GTA 5 has exceeded GTA 4's lifetime sales to retail in six weeks

GTA 5 has exceeded GTA 4's lifetime sales to retail in six weeks

Borderlands 2 has shifted 7.5 million copies to retail.

Grand Theft Auto 5 was so wildly successful that it's already "sold-in" nearly 29 million units, more than GTA 4 did in its entire lifetime, publisher Take-Two announced.

Now "sold-in" refers to selling copies to stores, not individual people, but it still gives a sense of how much more popular GTA5 is than its already vastly successful predecessor.

GTA 5's sales boosted the publisher's Non-GAAP net revenue up to $1.27 billion for the quarter ending 30th September, a substantial increase over the $288 million for the same time period last year. Additionally, the company made $118.9 million in catalog sales of such titles as Borderlands 2, Civ 5, NBA 2K13 and Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar confirms it has halved GTA Online repeat mission payouts

Rockstar has halved the amount of money you'll receive from repeating missions in Grand Theft Auto Online.

The developer confirmed the change over the weekend on its support site after anger from fans at its sneaky introduction - the alteration first went live in last Friday's patch, although Rockstar made no mention of it at the time.

"For those of you inquiring about mission payouts, there was a change that reduces payouts by 50 per cent after a repeat of the mission," Rockstar explained. "The first time you play and beat the mission, you will get the full amount. Subsequent replays will see a payout amount reduced by half. This is to keep the game balanced as well as encourage the exploration of new missions and content in the game.

Rockstar has issued a PS3 update to Grand Theft Auto Online that should eliminate issues with profiles losing progress.

While the update is only on PS3 so far, Rockstar noted on its Newswire that it will be out on Xbox 360 "tomorrow at the latest."

"This title update will resolve the cause of players losing their gameplay progress except for some specific instances where players purchase a vehicle and the save does not occur due to a cloud save failure," Rockstar explained. "A fix for that particular issue is being worked on and we will provide an update as soon as we know when this will be resolved."

GTA 5 beats GTA 4's lifetime sales in UK after just three weeks

Grand Theft Auto 5 has, after just three weeks on sale, beaten the lifetime sales of Grand Theft Auto 4 in the UK.

Rockstar North's open world game sold over 1.57 million units in the UK alone in one day, generating eye-watering revenue of Ł65 million. The previous day one record was held by Call of Duty: Black Ops, which sold 1.41 million units and generated Ł58 million upon its 9th November 2010 launch.

Now, after three weeks on sale, GTA 5 is already the UK's 12th best-selling game of all time. As for revenue, GTA 5 is in fifth place in the all-time money-making list, behind four Call of Duty games. But it's on the up - GTA 5 revenue has already almost equalled the total of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Could garages finally be safe again?

Today's title update for Grand Theft Auto 5 not only adds Grand Theft Auto Online, it fixes a host of well known issues.

Over a week ago developer Rockstar warned people not to park their cars in garages as they'd sometimes wind up mysteriously vanishing. It appears Rockstar has solved this as today's update fixes "issues with saved vehicles going missing, or losing their upgrades."

We're still trying to gain confirmation from Rockstar that the garages are safe to use again, but it sure sounds like they are.

UK chart: FIFA 14 sales down on last year's FIFA 13 by 24%

UK chart: FIFA 14 sales down on last year's FIFA 13 by 24%

Possibly due to GTA5. Possibly due to next-gen transition.

FIFA 14 has entered the UK chart at number one, but launch week sales were down 24 per cent compared to FIFA 13.

Chart-Track suggests this may be down to "all the money spent last week", referencing the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 the week prior. GTA5 is the biggest game of all time based on week one sales.

Chart-Track also suggests FIFA 14 may have suffered as a result of releasing during a console transition, saying, "consumers may be delaying this purchase until PS4/Xbox One versions are available".

Rockstar adding more servers to prepare for GTA Online's launch

Rockstar adding more servers to prepare for GTA Online's launch

But still expects "temperamental" early days.

Rockstar is rather excited about the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online next month, but one problem it's facing is that GTA 5 has actually been even more popular than the developer expected, so it's frantically trying to add more servers to meet the demands of its several million players.

"One thing we are already aware of, and are trying to alleviate as fast as we can, is the unanticipated additional pressure on the servers due to a significantly higher number of players than we were anticipating at this point," said Rockstar in its latest blog post. "We are working around the clock to buy and add more servers."

Despite this, the company is still expecting the early days to be a bit rough. "This increased scale is only going to make the first few days even more temperamental than such things usually are," it stated. "This is part of the problem some of you have been experiencing with the iFruit App and some Social Club services - we apologise in advance for this and thank you for your patience in this area."

Usually it's the annual release of Call of Duty that prompts a nation's navel gazing and the question of whether violent video games make people more violent. But this year it's that comfy old slipper Grand Theft Auto (and then probably COD and then probably Assassin's Creed).

GTA5 sells more in first week than launch weeks of all other GTAs combined

GTA5 sells more in first week than launch weeks of all other GTAs combined

Beats previous UK best Call of Duty: Black Ops by almost 250k units.

As you'd expect, Grand Theft Auto 5 dominated the UK chart this week, storming to top spot as the UK's fastest-selling game of all time.

After five days on sale in launch week it is already the 24th biggest-selling game ever in the UK. Breaking that down, it's the 11th biggest on Xbox 360 and 10th biggest on PlayStation 3. Xbox 360 accounted for 57 per cent of sales, PS3 43 per cent.

More astonishing figures: GTA 5's launch week was 2.4 times greater than GTA4's. It shifted almost 250,000 more units than previous record-holder, 2010's Call of Duty: Black Ops.

How the first Grand Theft Auto was almost cancelled

"Anarchic makes it sound sexier than it ought to be. It was messy."

Ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 5, some of the creators of the first Grand Theft Auto game have discussed its troubled, four-and-a-half year development and revealed how it was nearly cancelled before release.

In a video feature published by The Guardian, ex-DMA Design (now Rockstar North) staff recall the making of the 1997 PC and PSone game, which presented an open world from a top-down perspective.

"The writers were driving at one way. The level designers were driving at another way. They weren't meeting in the middle," Gary Penn, the producer and creative director who joined the project to help bring it all together, said.
