FeatureJapan's slumbering giants awake at Tokyo Game Show

Metal Gear and Final Fantasy prove there's still plenty to get excited about from gaming's spiritual home.

Stop me if you've think that you've heard this one before. Japan's best years in the games industry are behind it, the Tokyo Game Show is an irrelevance to western audiences and consoles are all but done for in the land that was once their spiritual home. It's bunk, mostly, and this week's show has been a sweet, sharp reminder that Japan remains the source of some of the grandest in the world of video games, as well as the best barometer of its future.

The absent games we're beginning to wonder about.

Amidst all the excitement about E3 press conference stars like Beyond, Watch Dogs and Need for Speed: Most Wanted, it's easy to forget that not everything we hear about will make it to fruition, and that the time it takes for a game to go from spectacular reveal to an ignominious death that no one even bothers to report is only as long as it takes for a trailer to fade from memory. Given that we've published 478 videos so far this week, and some of them were for games like that Nike Plus thing, that's not long.

Questions and answers from the Square Enix press conference. Mostly the former.

There were plenty of things about the Xbox 360 E3 press conference that were surprising - not least, what wasn't in it - but none more so than the announcement that Final Fantasy XIII would be coming to Microsoft's console, at launch, in the US and Europe.

Tetsuya Nomura speaks.

Eurogamer unbows and the room straightens itself. There's a story that Tetsuya Nomura once told a games journalist, with distinctly un-Japanese frankness, that the questions were rubbish and he wasn't going to answer them anymore. Brilliant, obviously, but as such it's best behaviour and utmost politeness from us tonight as we sit down to talk about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a counterpoint title to the main thirteenth game in the series, of which Nomura is director.
