Final Fantasy 13 PC will get 1080p support next week

To coincide with the Steam release of FF13-2.

Final Fantasy 13's PC release in October was met with a worrisome amount of disappointment and anger as its resolution was locked to 1280x720. Thankfully, modding extraordinaire Durante came to the rescue and released a mod that alleviated this problem, but not without a few flies in the ointment.

Eurogamer.net Podcast #99: FF13-2 and Amalur RPG Special

Martin and Oli give their reckonings to Tom Champion.

Ding-dong! Ding-dong! It's time for the troops to shuffle into a side-room as we ring the bell for another Eurogamer Podcast in this, the 99th instalment of our irregular vowel movements. We're moving dangerously close to our 100th episode (and as you rightly pointed out last week it's not quite a centenary, but well.... It's felt like 100 years) and to celebrate we're talking about two recent high-profile RPG offerings.

First Final Fantasy 13-2 DLC announced

Story-based extensions incoming.

The first batch of Final Fantasy 13-2 DLC launches on Xbox Live on 7th February and PlayStation Network the day after, publisher Square Enix has announced.

It's a Coliseum Battle titled Lightning & Amodar. These regular add-ons will pit the player against enemies from previous entries in the series, allowing you to recruit them into your party once they've been defeated. A price has not yet been confirmed.

Square also announced plans to release additional story episodes for some of the game's key characters, though wouldn't offer additional detail on exactly what to expect.

Final Fantasy 13-2 Review

Final Fantasy 13-2 Review

Lightning strikes twice.

Final Fantasy 13 reflected the character of its heroine, Lightning: an elite, standoffish soldier who would let nothing come between her and her mission. The game presented a journey so focused and linear that its first 25 hours could be mapped out as an unbroken corridor. And Lightning's purity of focus saw Square Enix discard many Final Fantasy tropes so she could pursue her goals without distraction.

The series may reinvent itself with each new entry, but the games have always been tied together by common motifs: crystals, summons, Chocobos, airships, Yoshitaka Amano's Klimt-esque concept art, and that tinkling harp arpeggio. In Final Fantasy 13, both towns and exploration were discarded as extraneous trappings, unnecessary to Lightning's mission or - as it was referred to in the game's terminology - her Focus. Rarely has a game been so focused as to discard so much of its own heritage.

Serah, Lightning's younger sister and heroine of Final Fantasy 13-2 - a rare sequel to a mainline Final Fantasy title - is a primary school teacher in a seaside village. She has none of the steel composure of her elder sibling, none of that dogged determination that makes Lightning such a difficult character to empathise with. And the game world reflects this from the first moment.

The truth behind retailer-exclusive pre-order extras

The truth behind retailer-exclusive pre-order extras

Why stores do it and what it means for gamers.

One of the less popular trends of 2011 was the ramping up of the retailer-exclusive in-game extra. You know the sort of the thing - pre-order a title from Game and get a couple of extra character skins, choose HMV and get some weapon unlocks, or give your money to Zavvi and get early access to a map.

Depending on where you stand, it's either a nice bit of added value or a nuisance that prevents fans experiencing absolutely everything a game has to offer. Until recently it's been fairly easy to ignore. But things took a left turn with the release of Batman: Arkham City earlier this year, when UK supermarket giant Tesco secured a significant slab of DLC content all for themselves - a separate set of missions called Joker's Carnival Challenge Map. A sign of things to come, perhaps?

With that in mind we approached a number of UK retailers, publishers and developers to find out more about the process, why it happens and whether gamers are doomed to suffer as a result.

Final Fantasy 13-2 sales well down on FF13

Final Fantasy 13-2 sales well down on FF13

Japan charts: how the Vita's launch line-up fared.

Final Fantasy 13-2 entered this week's Japanese software chart at number one, but sales of the game were way down on that of its predecessor.

The RPG sequel sold 525,271 to take the top spot, but that's nearly a third of the 1.5 million copies Final Fantasy 13 moved in its first four days back in 2009.

The game is due out on these shores on 3rd February 2012.

Cie'n it all before?

If you don't like Final Fantasy 13-2, it's your own fault.

For better or worse, the sequel to Square Enix's hard-to-love 2009 effort is a product of democracy. From its opening moments, it's clear that the franchise's core fanbase - or at least its noisier elements - has played a central role in how the game has taken shape.

Did you complain that Final Fantasy 13 was too linear? Square has listened - the corridors have widened out. Thought the first one took an age to get going? Fixed - FF13-2 throws you straight into a wildly OTT boss battle. Were you one of those stamping their feet at the lack of towns to explore and NPCs to chat up? Fear not - 13-2 is busier than Bluewater on Boxing Day. Or perhaps you took to a message board to decry the lack of merchants or Moogles? Rejoice - they're back.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 out in January

Lightning strikes twice.

RPG sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2 arrives in US stores in January for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, just a month after its Japanese launch, publisher Square Enix has revealed.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Any sign of a Pulse?

What with Final Fantasy XIII's soggy reception in 2009 and XIV Online's disastrous false start last year, these are dog days for Square Enix's flagship brand. Considering how stablemate and chief competitor Dragon Quest kicked into a new gear with last year's gangbusting Sentinels of the Starry Skies, suddenly the JRPG behemoth is looking decidedly fallible.

Square Enix blames bad year on FFXIV

And a "weak" console performance.

Square Enix is blaming a bad year on a "weak" console performance; the "continued delay in billing" for embattled MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online; the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan; and the write-off of goodwill - i.e. companies bought by the publisher now not being worth as much.

FFXIII-2: Keep your FFXIII save handy

Could a surprise be in store?

Square Enix has told Final Fantasy XIII fans it's probably a good idea to keep hold of their save files if they plan to play direct sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2 – there could be a surprise in store for them if they do.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 darker than X-2

XIII characters to return in new forms.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be a darker tale than Final Fantasy X-2, the last direct Final Fantasy sequel, according to Square Enix comments reported in Dengeki (thanks Siliconera).
