Fallout New California mod launches after seven years in development

It's time for another Fallout story! Only on this occasion it's about New Vegas rather than Fallout 76, so you can put those pitchforks away.

If you need something to scratch the single-player Fallout itch, you might want to check out Fallout New California - a New Vegas mod seven years in the making. The mod officially launched to the public today, and provides players with a brand new worldspace "unconnected to the Mojave" that's about two thirds the size of the New Vegas map. It also comes with an "independent story" that takes anywhere from six to 30 hours to complete. As the modders themselves put it, New California is "basically a separate game".

Originally known as Project Brazil, the mod (by creators Brandan Lee and Rick Hukkanen) was first made for Fallout 3, until the release of New Vegas saw the team switch over to the newer game. It's an unofficial prequel to New Vegas, and is set in a place called "The Pass" 20 years before Obsidian's story (in 2260, if you're wondering) takes place.

Fallout 4 New Vegas mod shares first 10 minutes of gameplay

It's the ideal mod. Fallout New Vegas, re-made using the Fallout 4 creation engine, is everything I could have asked for and more. And now, after just over a year of development, the team behind the Fallout 4 New Vegas project has shared a first glimpse of their work.

The clip shows the first 10 minutes of gameplay and features the cutscene from Dr. Mitchell's house. The video also displays the New Vegas character creator, re-worked to merge with the Fallout 4 version. Everything's been updated to look shiny and new (well, by Fallout standards), and there's even brand new professional voice acting. Mercifully, they haven't included the hundreds of DLC notifications from the original New Vegas.

Looking at the team's updates, the project seems to be coming along nicely. Over the past few months, the team has shared images of 2D poster designs, updated gun models and re-vamped locations. Although Fallout 4 New Vegas will not include the DLC from the original, it's easy to see why, as re-creating the base game is a vast project in itself.

Inside Obsidian: How RPG's greatest survivors kept the lights on

"They say the path to Hell is paved with good intentions."

Over the years, I've come to know what to expect from Obsidian, or so I thought. Obsidian makes RPGs, beautiful, intriguing, sometimes slightly shonky RPGs with great writing and vivid characters and just a lingering trace of thriftiness. They make games where the concepts, where the soul, trumps the budget.

With the penultimate season of Game of Thrones finished on TV and a colossal amount of people talking about it, it's hard to imagine any video game maker ever passing up the opportunity to get a piece of that franchise pie. But as I found out recently, Obsidian Entertainment did - it turned down Game of Thrones.

Fallout: New Vegas modder is adding Superhot combat

The Mojave just got even hotter.

Fallout: New Vegas may be over a half decade old, but plenty of modders are still tinkering with Obsidian's sequel. Earlier this year we saw someone making a multiplayer mod, while another updated its looting UI to be like that of Fallout 4, and yet another modder is making an expansion as big as the original game's Mojave desert. Now, YouTuber Xilandro is altering Fallout: New Vegas' combat to play like that of delightful first-person puzzle shooter Superhot.

Something to tide you over until Fallout 4 comes out.

Modders have created an add-on for Fallout: New Vegas that looks as slick as an official expansion.

Fallout : Autumn Leaves, out 1st October, adds over 2000 lines of voiced dialogue, new characters and eight quests.

Also added to the Obsidian-developed post-apocalyptic role-playing game are new perks, several endings and an original soundtrack from Pablo Coma, the composer of Healer's Quest. All in all, expect more than seven hours of gameplay, the modders said.

Bethesda announces first ever E3 conference

Sure to cause some fallout.

Bethesda has announced plans for its first ever dedicated E3 conference, which is set to take place in Hollywood on Sunday, 14th June 2015.

A limited number of tickets will be made available to fans, or you'll be able to watch the whole thing from home via the magic of Twitch (and, naturally, Eurogamer will be reporting the whole thing live).

There's no word yet on what Bethesda will be showing, although we can take a couple of educated guesses.

What does Fallout: New Vegas' lead designer want from Fallout 4?

But don't expect an announcement any time soon, Bethesda says.

It's been more than a year since Skyrim developer Bethesda Game Studios moved wholesale onto its "next major project", which we expect to be Fallout 4. The game was in pre-production while Skyrim DLC rolled out, and in April 2013 was declared ready for the team's "full attention".

A trademark for Fallout 4 has been spotted, sparking speculation that Bethesda may be set to announce a new PC and next-gen version of the post-apocalyptic open world role-playing game series.

“To all my#Fallout3and#ThreeDogfans: There may be more of the Dog coming!” he said.

Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas introduces a Hardcore mode that challenges players with dehydration, ammo weight, non-instantaneous healing and tougher enemies, according to a new preview in PC Gamer (reported by Duck and Cover).

Super Mutants will also be more intelligent and varied, and there's an elite Nightkin enemy and a female mutant with a 1950s-style haircut who may be important.

Fallout: New Vegas is set in the Mojave desert, and apparently the area of Vegas wasn't hit hard in the apocalypse so many buildings remain intact. The storyline follows a conflict between the California Republic, Caesar's Legion and New Vegas residents.
