Despite concern among the franchise's most ardent fans, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow launched to critical and commercial acclaim. The overlords at Konami were pleased.

Dave Cox is tired. He's spent the last two and a half years flying back and forth from Spain to the US to Japan making Castlevania: Lords of Shadow the best game it could possibly be. Now, with the game out, a top ten UK all-formats chart entry under its belt, and positive reviews to savour, it all seems worthwhile.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has to be something rather special to really spark excitement, and not just because I had to get up at 8am on a Monday in order play it for this preview. Previous Castlevanias Judgement and Harmony of Despair have both left everyone justifiably wary of the words 'series reboot'. Perhaps only the words 'family-friendly remake' could be more dispiriting.

"Lone warrior battles supernatural creatures with a whip." As high concepts go, that's a pretty straightforward one - and a familiar one to anybody who's played a Castlevania game before. Konami's much-loved action-adventure series has been going for almost 25 years, and is now set to continue with PS3 and Xbox 360 title Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
