Beyond Good & Evil 2 beta "end of next year"

A beta version of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is due for release towards the end of 2019, creator Michel Ancel has said.

Ubisoft Montpellier's ambitious, currently-half-built open world multiplayer space opera thing got another showing at E3 this year - where we were treated to around 30 minutes of gameplay behind closed doors.

We'll have more on what we saw shortly, but as impressive as BG&E2's tech currently is - and as lovely as that CGI trailer reintroducing BG&E1's Pey'J and Jade was - it was clear the game still had a long way to go.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 will include the main characters of Beyond Good & Evil, Ubisoft has just confirmed during its E3 press conference. It's a huge surprise, seeing as both were kept out of the game's reveal a year ago.

Jade is described as an antagonist to the game's main cast. She's younger and fierce looking (BG&E2 is a prequel) and, even more surprisingly, appears to be allied with the BG&E enemies, the Domz.

Pey'J is also back, as your ship's cook. He also looks a little younger.

Fans got a first glimpse at Beyond Good and Evil 2 gameplay last night in a developer livestream filled with information about the work-in-progress game.

The footage shows multiplayer spaceship combat, on-foot melee fighting and sweary monkey shipmate Knox in action.

It was the highlight of a half hour Twitch stream which featured creator Michel Ancel and others discussing the game and its development.

Based on how close it comes to achieving its cosmic pitch, it will either be the greatest game ever or a massive disappointment. Either way, it will make Peter Molyneux's grandiose ambitions sound tame in comparison. Strap in!

A common rumour that Beyond Good & Evil 2 would be a Switch exclusive was effectively quashed today, as series creator Michel Ancel took to Instagram to say the much anticipated prequel is "no Switch exclusive as far as I know."

Given that he's the creative director on the game, it seems like he would know.

The game's official website asked people to sign up for their platform of choice with the options being PS4, Xbox One and PC, but Ancel claimed that the site was "a little buggy" and that these choices may not represent the game's final platforms.

After nearly 15 years the long, long, loooong anticipated sequel to Beyond Good & Evil has finally been unveiled. Only it isn't a sequel at all, but rather a prequel.

Indeed series creator Michel Ancel is full of surprises. Closing Ubisoft's E3 press conference moments ago, Ubisoft unveiled a CGI trailer showing the new cast of this adventure.

The trailer begins with an anthropomorphic monkey trading a relic for a disc with a sinister-looking pig-man sporting a Fu Manchu moustache. The deal goes south when the pig-man realises he's been given a chocolate trophy and things go all The Fifth Element as the monkey man hops onto his getaway flying motorbike driven by a dark-skinned human woman with a fro.

Ubisoft designer Michel Ancel, creator of both franchises, will get "more leeway" should Origins perform well at retail, the company's sales exec Tony Key told Industry Gamers.

"Ultimately, Rayman is [Ancel's] original creation, and if all the people that love Beyond Good & Evil understand he is more than a one trick pony... and that if Rayman: Origins does well, it gives him more leeway for other opportunities because he has to build up his studio," Key said.

Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot has said Beyond Good & Evil 2 will be "more accessible" so more casual gamers will want to buy it.

He was speaking at the recent UbiDays event, where the very first teaser trailer for the game was shown.

"We saw with Beyond Good & Evil that so many customers were extremely happy with the game. We had a different audience at that time. We had more core gamers than casual gamers than we have today," Yves Guillemot told Next-Gen.biz.
