Wintry survival sim The Long Dark will premiere its long-awaited Story Mode in the spring and run through an episodic season throughout the remainder of 2016 on PC and Xbox One, developer Hinterland has announced.
I've encountered three main antagonists during the dozen or so hours that I've spent with Hinterland's early access survival title, The Long Dark. That takes some doing in a game that's currently without its upcoming story mode and the mooted addition of AI survivors to its open-ended sandbox. Nonetheless, I encounter the same three foes frequently enough that they bear telling of here, so that you might avoid making the same mistakes I have.

Players will have to hunt for food, scavenge for supplies and avoid predators all while monitoring such vitals as their calorie intake, temperature, fatigue, hunger and thirst.

New indie outfit Hinterland Studios has seemingly formed out of nowhere, but the eight-person Vancouver-based team has quite the pedigree.
Founded by Raphael van Lierop, the director of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and narrative director on Far Cry 3, the studio includes: the lead writer on all three major God of War games, Marianne Krawczyk; lead programmer on the Saints Row series, Alan Lawrance; art director on League of Legends and The Unfinished Swan, Hokyo Lim; audio director on Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic, David Chan; and composers Cris Velasco and Sascha Dikiciyan collaborated together on Mass Effect 3, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, and Borderlands.
Hinterland's debut title will be The Long Dark, an episodic first-person survival sim set in the harsh climate of the northern wilderness following a geomagnetic storm that leaves North America without power.
