Far Cry 2 announced

Ubisoft goes it alone.

Ubisoft has announced that Far Cry 2 is in development for PC and due for release in spring 2008.

It's the sequel to the 2004 original developed by Crytek, which won wide critical acclaim. Since then Ubisoft has released internally developed console spin-offs, and finally acquired the full rights to the series in March 2006.

The publisher's Montreal studio will be handling creation this time around, and is confident it can recreate the impact of the first.

"Far Cry marked the beginning of a new era for shooters. An era of gorgeous graphics and of advanced artificial intelligence," said John Parkes, Ubisoft marketing man. "We are confident that Far Cry 2 will have the same impact again on the FPS genre landscape."

German developer Crytek has since signed with EA and is currently developing first-person shooter Crysis for PC.

Ubisoft expects assets for Far Cry 2 will be released "soon".
