EDF: Insect Armageddon revealed

Budget bug blaster gets a sequel.

A follow-up to cult shooter Earth Defense Force 2017 is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, publisher D3 has announced.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon sees you protecting the streets of New Detroit from a fresh invasion of alien bugs.

As in its predecessor, which Eurogamer's Kieron Gillen deemed worthy of a 9/10 back in 2006, you can team up with a friend to vapourise giant insects and reduce your home city to piles of smouldering rubble.

Matt Hazard developer Vicious Cycle has taken over the reigns from Sandlot, the Japanese studio responsible for Earth Defense Force 2017. It's adding three-player online co-operative play for the main campaign as well as a Survival mode, which pits up to six players against an endless onslaught of alien critters.

The game will launch on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in spring 2011.
