Cheap This Week - 11/05/11

Dirt 3! LA Noire! Civ 5! Witcher!

Nintendo 3DS [Black] - £165 delivered

This is the lowest price yet for Nintendo's new stereoscopic handheld. I wonder if it will keep dropping and perhaps hit the magic £150 mark. I don't think the market will settle on a more permanent price until after the second wave of software has hit.

Clearly we've not got a repeat of hardware shortages from previous Nintendo launches, but I did think that the £200+ prices many retailers were asking for on release day were a bit ambitious.

I've spent a fair bit of time with my 3DS now and I'm much more comfortable with the 3D effect than I was at first. I'm just waiting for more games and with E3 just around the corner, no doubt there will be some exciting announcements on that front soon.

Civilization V, PC - £12.85 delivered

The 2010 update to the long running, time stealing, strategy series. I've had more "Oh gosh it's 3am I need to sleep" moments with Civ than any other series of game, although I've only just started playing this one recently. It's very pretty and the HUD has had a lovely aesthetic overhaul.

You might want to stump up for the Goatee Edition - yours for £24.85. It includes all of the currently released DLC and a soundtrack. Check out Quintin's review for more.

Deal of the week

The Witcher, PC£3.05

This is the DRM-free enhanced edition, and the director's cut. It comes with a boatload of bonus downloads, including a soundtrack, wallpapers, PDF artbook and more.

Questing, Witcher-style.

With The Witcher, CD Projekt achieved the impossible. By giving the game a complete overhaul in the guise of the enhanced edition, they managed to bump the game up from a 7/10 to an 8/10, having fixed issues like massive load times and patchy translations. Find a full lowdown on the various enhancements in Kieron's review.

The Witcher 2 is out in less than a week, so you've probably not got time to play the first one to completion before the sequel arrives. But why not pick up a bargain and hope the second game is cheaper by the time you've finished this one?
