Battleborn's first story DLC is out now

But will it be enough to attract new players?

Battleborn didn't sell well, but developer Gearbox remains committed to its FPS/MOBA hybrid and just released its first story DLC today with the add-on Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion.

This is actually the first of five planned story expansions for Battleborn. Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion lets players assume the roles of 28 unique heroes in both co-operative story missions and competitive matches.

Despite Battleborn's poor sales out of the gate - something not helped by its release window coinciding with the Overwatch open beta - publisher 2K has remained firm that it will continue to support the hero shooter in hopes of expanding its audience.

"We think there remains an opportunity to grow the audience for this unique experience over time,"Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in August. "2K will continue to drive engagement and recurrent consumer spending on the title through add-on content and virtual currency."

While sales were unimpressive, Battleborn was generally well received critically. Eurogamer contributor Jon Denton fell just shy of offering it a wholehearted recommendation upon its May launch, but he noted that "there's plenty to admire in Battleborn."

"This is clearly a labour of love," he said in his Battleborn review. "When the multiplayer flows, it's fresh and new in a way that even Overwatch can't boast. It'll take time to see just how the online modes balance out, but there's definitely something here that could be worth pursuing."
