Sony had more wow moments, but Microsoft has closed the competence gap

A lack of 2014 titles on both sides of the console war favours Xbox.

First things first, congratulations to Microsoft. I have been on their case ever since that awful mess in Redmond last May, but Monday's E3 press conference was a vast improvement. The message may have taken a long time to go in, but the focus on games that everyone has been asking for was inarguable - so much so that even a cool new Snap mode app giving you more control over Achievements was relegated to the pre-show, presumably not to dampen the focus and risk incurring further wrath.

EA Sports has announced pre-order incentives for the FIFA 15 Ultimate Team Edition of the game - including the option to have Lionel Messi on your team for your first five matches - when the game launches on 25th September in the UK.

The Magic Circle is a puzzle exploration game set inside vapourware

BioShock 2 director Jordan Thomas turns the immersive sim inside out.

It's fashionable for game developers to show their working these days, so it's no huge surprise when Irrational alumnus Jordan Thomas reveals that his first game since going indie, The Magic Circle, is about the clash of interesting systems in an unfinished setting. But this is no alpha version and you're not invited to contribute to the game's development. Instead The Magic Circle is set in a fictional unfinished game world, and you play an unfinished hero rebelling against the developers' lack of progress.

VideoVideo: Games stuck in development hell

Outside Xbox refuses to let go.

It's E3 next week, but before we start getting excited about brand new games, spare a thought for the ones that got away - or rather the ones that supposedly still exist but, let's be honest, we have given up all hope of ever getting to play.

VideoVideo: Gaming's best and worst alternative histories

The new Wolfenstein follows in all sorts of footsteps.

Wolfenstein: The New Order topped the charts recently with its robo-Nazi take on what would have happened if things went differently in World War 2, but Machine Games was hardly the first developer to rewrite history books in search of a premise.

Batman: Arkham Knight release date slips to 2015

In the meantime, there's lots more detail on the Batmobile.

Rocksteady Games' Batman: Arkham Knight will not be with us this October after all, the developer has revealed, but instead will make its debut on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2015.

Watch Dogs: stuck in the unfunny valley

Open-world games are often better when they lighten up.

Like many people - judging by Ubisoft's declaration of record day-one sales - I have spent the last few days driving around Watch Dogs' next-gen vision of Chicago, raising and lowering bollards and searching in vain for something to wear that doesn't make me look like Neo in chunky knit. I've had some fun but, as is often the case, I think the things I've most enjoyed have been the incidental details. No, not Aiden Pearce's "iconic cap", but things like the billboard signs hacked to show internet memes, or the snatches of stolen SMS traffic thrown up by Aiden's profiler. "I'm doing vaginas tonight... Oh crap! Fajitas! Fajitas!"

FIFA World beta review

Ultimate Team finally goes free-to-play. Is this the future of FIFA?

By now, Ultimate Team's evolution from a cool add-on into the most popular mode in the whole FIFA series is well documented. EA Sports' fantasy football-inspired game lets you build a squad of players from around the world, tinkering with formations and player chemistry, before taking on other players or AI teams in actual games of FIFA. Playing matches earns you coins, which you spend on the transfer market as you seek to strengthen. It's a potent concoction that keeps many players going all year round.

Final Team of the Season squad available in FIFA 14 Ultimate Team

UPDATE: EA Sports' own top XI available until the weekend.

UPDATE 29/05 12:15 BST: FIFA 14 Ultimate Team: World Cup may have been delayed, but you can always console yourself by trying to pack the final Team of the Season, which was released last night and is available in packs until this Friday at 6pm BST.

VideoVideo: Mario Kart 8 live stream

60 minutes of gameplay, collector's edition giveaway. Starts 5pm BST.

Finally! After months of waiting, this week the next generation of consoles finally gets motoring with the arrival of the most hotly anticipated game of the past two years. Watch Dogs? What's that? I am of course referring to Mario Kart 8, the triumphant return of Nintendo's signature kart racing series.

The Evil Within release date now in October

Shinji Mikami's survival horror title slips a couple of months.

If you're eagerly anticipating The Evil Within, Shinji Mikami's return to the survival horror genre he helped invent, then it turns out you will need to anticipate it eagerly for a little while longer than previously expected.

VideoVideo: Watch Watch Dogs, dogs

We are live-streaming three times today. Woof.

How many dogs watch a Watch Dogs dog if a Watch Dogs does watch dogs? It's the question on everyone's lips today, probably, and we're keen to help you answer it, which is why Ian is going to be live-streaming Ubisoft's new open-world action game three times this afternoon so you can dip in and see whether it's the sort of thing you might enjoy.

Eurogamer readership survey 2014

Tell us about yourself and what you'd like to see on the site.

Heeeeeey! Do you have a few minutes? Every so often, we like to poll you guys to find out a bit more about who you are and what you like, so we put together a reader survey. If you aren't too busy, it would really help if you were able to fill it out.

Better without Kinect

Microsoft makes the best of a bad situation.

It must have hurt to do it, but Microsoft's decision to strip Kinect out of Xbox One and lower the price of the console feels like the right one overall. The problems it solves were simply too important to get hung up on the problems it creates.

Blizzard not working on Hearthstone for consoles

Android takes priority. Spectator mode being designed at the moment.

The Hearthstone team at Blizzard has its hands full at the moment finishing Curse of Naxxramas and the upcoming Android version, all of which means nobody's spending any time thinking about console versions, the developer told Eurogamer last week.

Hearthstone Curse of Naxxramas: where death is a power-up

What the 30 new cards will mean for Blizzard's card strategy game.

There is a corner of Blizzard Entertainment that is now obsessed with death. As we grow older we all start to dwell on our own mortality, of course, but this is different: the people making Hearthstone are excited about death, the process of dying and the effect death has on the ones we leave behind. I can hear it in their voices, speaking to me over the phone from thousands of miles away. They are excited about finally realising the potential of death - and particularly the potential of deathrattles.
