New version also on PC/PS3/360. Free patch adds some extras for existing owners.

It's easy to forget that Ubisoft really hit on something with Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. It was one of those open-world games where you might set off towards a mission marker with good intentions, but you would seldom get there because you would be too busy being dragged this way and that by compelling diversions. It turns out Assassin's Creed Rogue is effectively Black Flag 2, and that's fine by me.

RecommendedGrand Theft Auto 5 review

Friends reunited. Our original review of Rockstar's open world opus.

Grand Theft Auto 5 releases on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 today, bringing Rockstar's expansive open world game to the new generation of consoles. Digital Foundry will be assessing the technical differences throughout the week, and we'll be bringing you more on what's new and how the original stands up nearly a year on from its release. To start, though, here's our original review, first published in September 2013.

VideoVideo: One of Assassin's Creed Unity's time rift levels

See Paris in another era. Warning: spoilers!

Warning: Although this video does not include specific story spoilers, it does occur around halfway through the game and is by its nature slightly spoilerific, so if you don't want to know anything about it then don't read the description or watch it below!

Assassin's Creed Unity review

More of the Seine.

It's not hard to identify the best thing about Assassin's Creed Unity: Revolutionary Paris is one of the most beautifully assembled settings in this long-running, well-travelled and temporally uninhibited series. One person you meet says he yearns for a time when Paris isn't so mired in filth, but these are not the concerns of protagonist Arno Dorian, who was born into nobility and literally climbs out of the gutter at every opportunity, scaling beatific monuments from Notre Dame and the Palais de Justice to Montmartre and the Sorbonne. When he stares down from peaks and spires, hundreds of people riot in the streets as Ubisoft Montreal taps into the extra power of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The old cliché was "living, breathing cities". Here we have a starving, writhing one, nevertheless resplendent.

The games that have defined PS4 and Xbox One

And what they say about the generation so far.

It's been one year since PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launched around the world, and although the initial line-up of games was so remarkably drab and lifeless that it led executives to ponder why millions of people were buying the consoles in the first place, things have now picked up to the extent that there is lots of good stuff to choose from. So we've decided to do just that.

Destiny guide

Gold chests, how to reach level 20 and 30 quickly, farming guides and exotic bounties.

In its short time on the market, Destiny has sold millions of copies and got many of us hooked thanks to its tight combat loop and disgustingly moreish gear grind. But even if you've played it for over a hundred hours, like several of the Eurogamer team, you probably haven't figured everything out. Do you have all the gold loot chests? Are you struggling to level an alt quickly enough? Are you caught levelling in the mid-20s and having trouble figuring out how and what to prioritise to advance further? And if you're deep in the endgame, are you unsure about the best exotic bounties to undertake?

The Crew PC specs revealed

What you need under the hood.

Ubisoft has announced the minimum, recommended and optimal PC specifications for its open-world driving game The Crew, which is due out on 2nd December.

The problem with video game guns

Is that lots of them are boring.

So I was browsing the UK video game charts the other day when something dawned on me: there are only 15 games in the top 40 this week that are about firing guns.

Shadow Warrior review

Can Lo Wang keep us entertained? Shuriken.

There are a lot of things I like about Shadow Warrior, Flying Wild Hog's modern reimagining of 3D Realms' ageing, racially insensitive first-person shooter, but I think the thing I like most is the level design, which is pure 90s. Remember key cards? Pulling levers to lower water levels? Magically sealed doors? It's all here. Each chapter is a labyrinthine sprawl of arenas, locked doors and secret areas. If you ever looked at the top-down map of a Doom level and marvelled at its intricacies, you will probably enjoy Shadow Warrior.

EA Sports has issued a patch for FIFA 15 that promises to improve shooting and goalkeeper behaviour among a host of other fixes and tweaks. According to the official forum, the patch is out now on PC and PS4 and coming soon to Xbox One.

Costume Quest 2 review

Cavity rush.

The idea of Costume Quest ought to be tantalising to just about anyone who used to be a kid: it's Halloween, but this time the monsters are real, and the only way to save the world is to collect costumes and use their transformative powers to fight back.

Bungie pays tribute to Destiny's famous loot cave

Latest hotfix shows where players left their mark.

Bungie has long since patched out Destiny's infamous loot cave, where players farmed valuable items by slaughtering low-level enemies who respawned much too frequently, but the developer has evidently decided that the legend of the cave should live on.

Pix the Cat review

Chat roulette.

Pix the Cat, from French studio Pastagames, is like a cross between Snake and Pac-Man Championship Edition. Played out on a single screen, you control a cat that moves along grid lines collecting eggs, which hatch into a train of ducklings who follow you around. As the train grows longer the environment becomes more claustrophobic and you have to be careful to avoid boxing yourself in or risk losing your combo.

Let's have more games that show rather than tell

Shadow of Mordor becomes great, but introduces itself poorly.

The success of games like Far Cry 3 and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor suggests that emergent possibilities arising from a clash of systems are becoming a bigger deal in open-world games, something that Chris Donlan wrote about earlier this week, and I imagine anyone who's ever been asked to follow someone from a rooftop is delighted to hear it. But while Shadow of Mordor is a fine game in many respects - and seemingly destined to become that weird rarity, the cult blockbuster - it does suffer from one disease of the modern open-world game that I wish designers would try to cure.

EGX 2014: Game of the Show

As voted for by visitors to the UK's biggest and best gaming event.

Farewell then, Earls Court. After many happy years in London's best and most spaceship-shaped exhibition space, EGX is moving on. Gamer Network (which also publishes this website, disclosure fans) wasn't keen to abandon the famous old venue, but unfortunately it is being demolished to make way for more houses no one can afford. If you were at EGX 2014, though, hopefully you will agree that the games industry gave Earls Court the send-off it deserved.

VideoVideo: Shadow of Mordor live stream

Join Ian's Fellowship from 5pm and win a PS4 copy of the game.

As Gandalf once said, all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. And if Aoife's take on Shadow of Mordor is anything to go by, some of that time would be wisely spent in its company, sneaking around and subverting the Ork hierarchy with combat borrowed from Batman.

Finally! After weeks and weeks of nonsense, Bungie has had a word with Master Rahool. Destiny's Cryptarch has been winding up the game's players for nearly a month now, but the latest patch means the rewards he hands out will be a bit more consistent with our expectations in future. Legendary engram? Legendary item.

RecommendedDesert Golfing review

Greater than the sum of its pars.

Mobile games! Remember them? They used to be the future of all this, but then a few things happened. First of all it turned out that the autorunner was not the start of a wave of new and exciting genres but pretty much the end of them. Then the businessmen and cloners moved in and turned pretty much everything else into exploitative crap. There are still a few people out there doing good mobile work, but usually more for the love than the sustainable income.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter begins by telling you that it is not going to hold your hand, and it is true to its word. As you emerge from a railway tunnel into an area of woodland in the shoes of detective Paul Prospero, there is no convenient low branch under which you must PRESS CTRL TO CROUCH, nor any low walls inviting you to PRESS SPACE TO JUMP. As far as the developer, Adrian Chmielarz's The Astronauts, is concerned, you can look up the buttons and then figure it out on your own. When you do, you discover there is no jumping in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter whatsoever. It's not that sort of game.

FIFA 15 Ultimate Team: time for a shake-up?

Our resident obsessive is still playing, but gradually losing interest.

If you're a football fan, then you probably spent last summer reading about Gareth Bale, Neymar and Luis Suarez. Would they move? How much for? It's all part of the fun of the sport. Me though, I was busy getting excited about another transfer entirely. Because at the start of July 2013, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended his two-year spell at Saint-Etienne and signed for every football hipster's second club, Borussia Dortmund.

Luis Suarez real-life football ban extends to FIFA 15

Former Liverpool man not available in Ultimate Team or Career mode.

When Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez took a bite out of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup this summer, he was quickly banned from "all football activities" by governing body FIFA until the end of October. It turns out that also included game modes in FIFA 15.

How to find Destiny Skywatch loot farming location

Get your engrams while it lasts.

The chances are that if you've hit Destiny's soft level cap then you are almost certainly hungry for engrams. The gear grind that makes up the endgame in Bungie's "shared world shooter" means that every time one of those glowing crystal prisms erupts from an enemy corpse, you make a beeline to it with ravenous haste. The trouble is that it can take ages to get hold of the more valuable blue variety and you're by no means guaranteed to get that sweet new leg armour you need when the drop finally comes.
