Sony working on "future platforms"

Developers being consulted this time.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that the electronics giant is working on future games platforms - and it's hoping to make them more developer-friendly this time.

"Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven't yet been talking about in public," Yoshida told Develop. "Some future platform-related activities."

The first-party studios under Yoshida's management - teams like Polyphony Digital, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla and God of War creators Santa Monica Studio - are being consulted on these hardware developments to ensure new machines are easier to make games for, Yoshida said.

"When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, 'get Worldwide Studios in on hardware development,'" he said.

"So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us."

Kutaragi masterminded the development of the first three PlayStations, with the PS3 in particular having a reputation as a complex and unusual design that is difficult to get the most out of.
