R-Type Tactics revealed

Shooter goes turn-based.

Developer Irem has unveiled a new game called R-Type Tactics.

It was revealed in the latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu, and appears to be a turn-based interpretation of the legendary series.

Little else is known about it other than the scans of screenshots from the article, but it seems Irem has found a new direction; clearly it wasn't telling porky-pies when it titled its last offering R-Type Final.

R-Type first appeared back in 1987 as a side-scrolling shooter in the arcades. It's undergone various updates since then, but has retained its screen-filling alien-battling core.

The Super Nintendo's R-Type III: The Third Lightning has since appeared on the European Virtual Console for 800 Points, as has the TurboGrafx-16 R-Type game for 600 Points. Go and get stuck in.
