Pokémon Go Power up PokéStops: How to power up PokéStops or Gyms explained

Everything we currently know about powering up PokéStops and Gyms.

Powering up PokéStops and Gyms is a new Pokémon Go feature currently being trialed in specific regions.

By performing an AR scan, you can gather location points and, in doing so, assist in levelling up a certain PokéStop or Gym. As this location becomes more powerful, you'll be able to receive a selection of bonuses.

Below you'll learn how to power up a PokéStop or Gym and where this feature is currently available.

Where is powering up a PokéStop or Gym in Pokémon Go live?

Introduced on October 13th 2021, the ability to power up PokéStops and Gyms is, at the time of writing, only available to players in New Zealand.

Since this feature is currently being trialed, we don't know if or when it will be available to every player across the world. Even if it is added to the game, then only specific PokéStops and Gyms will be granted the ability to power up.

How to power up a PokéStop or Gym in Pokémon Go

To power up a PokéStop or Gym in Pokémon Go, you must first be within range of a PokéStop or Gym which has this feature. You'll be able to identify these particular areas by the power up button in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and the ring about the Photo Disc.

PokéStops and Gyms are levelled by contributing location points, with the ring around the Photo Disc representing how many have been collected.

You can see the current amount of location points contributed to a PokéStop or Gym by viewing the Photo Disc.

Thanks to a datamine posted by lewymd on The Silph Road subreddit, we know the current location points required for powering up PokéStops or Gyms:

  • Level 1 - 50 location points
  • Level 2 - 100 location points
  • Level 3 - 250 location points

The information could change when the trial for this feature is complete.

To collect location points, you must tap on the power up button and, depending on which kind of stop you're visiting, select either 'Scan PokéStop' or 'Scan Gym.' If it's your first time scanning, you'll have to review the safety information first.

You will then have to scan the PokéStop or Gym in question.

To do this, you need to select the record button and, keeping the landmark for the spot in frame, scan for roughly 20 to 30 seconds. Ideally, you should walk around the object while keeping both the top and bottom in frame, but you'll be safe doing so.

Once the scan is complete, select 'Upload Now' to contribute to the powering up process, but you can select 'Upload Later' if you prefer. It's important to remember that your points will only be contributed to the powering up once the upload is complete, which means selecting 'Upload Later' will delay this process.

With the scan uploaded, your location points will be added to the PokéStop or Gym in question, allowing you to see how many points need to be collected till it levels up.

Remember - not only PokéStops or Gyms will have the ability to power up, so don't be surprised if your favourite spot doesn't have this feature.

Benefits of powering up PokéStops or Gyms in Pokémon Go

Each PokéStop or Gym which can be powering up in Pokémon Go can reach one of three levels - one, two or three. As the PokéStops or Gyms are levelled up their appearance on the map will change, making them easier to find, and the benefits from spinning the Photo Disc will increase.

The appearance of the PokéStop or Gym will change as its levelled up.

The PokéStop or Gym will also only stay powered up for a specific amount of time and, once this time is reached, will be depowered by one level.

Thanks to lewymd posting datamines on The Silph Road subreddit, we know both the time period and benefits for each level. It's important to remember that these details are subject to change as this new feature is trialed.

Below you can find how long each level will last:

  • Level 1 - 48 hours
  • Level 2 - 12 hours
  • Level 3 - 12 hours

At Level 1, you'll receive bonus items when you spin the Photo Disc for the PokéStop or Gym. Once it reaches Level 2, you'll continue receiving bonus items and your buddy will receive an extra heart.

Finally, at Level 3, you'll continue to earn the extra items and buddy heart, but, if you're visiting a PokéStop, the area will have extra spawns or, if it's a Gym, additional premier balls for a successful raid.

Good luck powering up PokéStops or Gyms!
