Codies' WWII dogfighter

Take to the skies and blow up everything you see with Heroes of the Pacific for PC and consoles.

Codemasters has announced a new flight combat game entitled Heroes of the Pacific for PS2, Xbox and PC. Screenshots hnar.

It's set during World War II and begins with the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour, with a story that unfolds across 26 missions based on historical records of the US Navy's Pacific campaign. Battle locations include Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and Midway Island, but not Activision Peninsula.

The game features more than 35 authentic Japanese and American military aircraft, including the Grumman F4F Hellcat, F6F Wildcat, Douglas SBD Dauntless, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and the Chance-Vought F4U Corsair. Models are comprised of up to 15,000 polygons, with up to 150 planes in the sky at a time.

You can take your pick between the pilot's and gunner's seats, and the single player game lets you guide up to 32 wingmen via an innovative menu system. There's also split-screen multiplayer and up to eight players can take part in online multiplayer battles, whatever your platform of choice. Modes include Dogfight, Team Dogfight, Capture the Flag and Fox and Hounds, and PC gamers get the option of LAN battles.

Heroes of the Pacific is being developed by IRGurus, an Australian studio whose previous titles include Australian Football League Live 2005, Gaelic Football 2005 and Mary King's Riding Star.

The game will go on show at E3 next month, with a release to follow in September. For more details, visit the official Heroes of the Pacific website.
