2K to publish The Darkness

It's due out this winter.

The future didn't look too bright for comic book tie-in The Darkness earlier this year, after troubled publisher Majesco finally fell over - but now things are looking up.

Turns out 2K Games has picked up the publishing rights, and the game is now officially on track to make an appearance on "next-generation console systems" this winter.

The Darkness is being brought to you by Starbreeze Studios, the same people responsible for the excellent Chronicles of Riddick tie-in. Based on the best-selling Top Cow comic book series, it's said to blend "dark modern crime drama and supernatural horror with intense first person non-linear gameplay."

You play as Mafia hitman Jackie Estacado, who finds himself possessed by the great and terrible powers of The Darkness. Your job is to work out how to master said Darkness as you struggle to topple the local Mob boss from his throne.

The Darkness comic books first appeared in 1996 and have since been published in 19 different languages around the world. A feature film is on the way too, and due for a release in 2007.
