Miyamoto to receive BAFTA Fellowship
Academy recognises "pioneer".
The British Academy has announced that it plans to honour Shigeru Miyamoto with a BAFTA Fellowship at this year's ceremony.
Previous gaming recipients include Will Wright and Nolan Bushnell.
"I am very grateful to be able to receive such an honourable award from the British Academy," Miyamoto said in a statement.
"Our videogames cannot be created by one person; since Donkey Kong until the most recent New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I have been working closely with a number of friends for three decades in order to develop fun and enjoyable games.
"I would like to receive this honourable award on behalf of all of these dependable colleagues."
BAFTA chairman David Parfitt said it was "only fitting" that Miyamoto be recognised alongside pioneers in other mediums, such as Stanley Kubrick and Harold Pinter, who have previously received the award.
"He helped to develop an entire creative industry and is still a major force in its continuing success," Parfitt said.
The BAFTA ceremony takes place on 19th March in London. Earlier this month the Academy revealed the nominations for its principle awards, with Uncharted 2 receiving the most nods.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, on which Miyamoto worked, was nominated in the Family & Social and Gameplay categories.
